Hi got a golf mk 6 1.6tdi. From cold start after a few minutes the engine cooling fan comes on and keeps running. The temperature gauge barely moves . Air con is off..the car is not doing a dpf regen. No engine management lights are on and the car drives fine as normal. This happens intermittently. Mostly when im.coming home after 10pm from work. Not really noticed the fan on during the day. Any ideas guys..also noticed that the revs idle st 1000rpm.

Stick a basic OBD2 reader on it and check all the basic sensor readings. If you have something producing an erroneous reading it might be running in a safe mode and turning the fan on for safety, even if the engine isn't warm.

Something like the coolant temp sensor perhaps.

I had something similar.

If everything looks fine on a basic reader, you might need one that reads all the sensors.

Happened again just now coming home from gym..cold start..I also noticed while parking the car reversing and going forward in a tight spot the PAS isn't very smooth when turning the steering? Its got a kind of jerky movement to it?

When I say similar. I had issues with a car cold starting. No codes.

Turned out there was a conflict between two temp sensors that only showed up when actually looking at the data. No engine management light came on.

The coolant temp sensor was saying the car was warm, which was causing the car to start rough as it was feeding the wrong air/fuel mix for a cold start.
Once up to temp it ran fine.

So, it sounds like it could be something like that. Only looking at the data might help.

Of course, cars are very complicated these days. So it could be a myriad of other things. But trying to look at erroneous sensor readings might be a good place to start.

The most basic thing you can do is to visually check all the fluid levels to ensure they are at the right level and work out when they were last changed.

Thanks..looks like a job for garage i normally take my car too...it starts and drives fine.
Coolant levels are all good...

Needs code reading and live data analysing.

Without more info it's just guessing, but id like to know the alternator output

The temperature gauge barely moves .
Does it barely move during normal operation?

Or does it barely move during the presence of the fault?

Is there only one fan?

Was there any recent work carried out?

Can you get your hands on a decent scanner?

When the fan runs, during idle, try turning the car off and starting it back on, does the fan start running again?

When did the fan usually turn on?

Yes it moves as normal when driving..heating is fine..

Think only 1 fan not sure .

No just normal service about a month ago..oil, oil filter and air filter changed.

Im not a mechanic dont hsve a reader.

Never really tried turning it off and on ..will try next time.

The fan never comes on whenndriving normally. However it does come on whrn the car is doing a passive regen ad I don't drive very long distances. I do take it on the motorway now and then whrn the blocked dpf sign comes on the dash. Ive had the car 7 years no problems before..first time fan problem

I guess the car has electric power steering? This rings alarm bells of the battery voltage being low.
John
Battery is fine..its a brand new varta battery..yes it has electric power steering. To be honest it was probably just me cos I was turning steering in lock and unlocked positions whilst trying to park in a tight spot..

An OBD2 reader is a basic item of equipment nowadays for even the non mechanically inclined motorist. A reader can be obtained cheaply enough, under £15 in some cases. Even a cheap one should be able to read the codes and give a pointer to what is wrong. A garage will want £50-60 to “diagnose” a fault unless you have a friendly mechanic.

Ok im getting no codes as no light is on dashboard..strange thing its not happened last few days
