That’s a strong point, such a requirement could end up excluding a huge chunk of people, including many British-born citizens. Seems like it would be really controversial and not just about immigrants.

I know it's not the same thing, however on a UK game show the other day one of the contestants said she had lived in Spain for eight years. 'Oh, you'll know some Spanish then?' the host asked. 'Emmm, no' was the answer. 'Ah but you'll know some of the basics' the host said 'for example how to say 'hello, my name is Jennifer.' The contestant somewhat sheepishly replied 'emmm, no.'
Spain suffers from a large number of foreign migrants who refuse to integrate and make no effort to learn the language.
Some of them hope to return to Britain to sponge off the NHS in their old age.

Some stay here and contribute minimal taxes, while moaning about how others should pay more.
Does Spain provide them with free 4* hotels, food, health care, dentistry, benefits, language courses, education, bikes, etc, etc, etc?
Don't those Britons (assuming you mean Britons), arrive with money in their pockets, and keep the local economies going?
How are they sponging? They will likely have spent their working lives, contributing to the UK, helping pay for the NHS. I guess you will be 'sponging' too, once you get a few years under your belt, or will you be committing hari-cari?
They are part of the same club.
They cover up for each other.
While the Brit expats are in Spain they spend the money they brought with them. No free hotels, no benefits. Get a grip.

To live in Spain you have to have enough money in the bank to support yourself, You are not entitled to any state benefits

An unintelligent person would try and argue equivalence of retiring expats and asylum seekers.
Asylum seekers are more intelligent than Reform voters.I think that will exclude 99.9% of the immigrants, but such a test, would exclude 95% of the white British in the UK
