I never understand this bit. They're claiming to be oppressed (or some other sob story bs) in their own country - but have no proof they came from the country they claim was doing the oppressing. So we just give them the benefit of the doubt and that's one more liability for the UK taxpayer.

I suspect the government assessors of their cases are experts in their field.
They'll be familiar with the facts on the ground, the local dialects, etc. They might be able to verify the issues relevant to the asylum seekers case, e.g. relatives, incidents, etc.
if you have other evidence to suggest I'm wrong, please present it.

Guy fawkes was not a politician. he was recruited for his technical expertise, such as it was.
Perhaps there'a a comparison there with today's right wing stirring up unrest among society.
It's not the politicians doing the deeds, it's the barely capable technicians, the ones who have difficulty with English, facts, evidence, and data.
