Just looking into purchasing a new house, but a crack down the exterior wall is worrying me. The house is about 30 years old and is detached. Should I be concerned?

No.

Knowing how brittle stone is and how uncooperative it is regards ex-con movement, I'd say it's to be expected, especially on a south facing wall. Larger block units fare worse than say smaller brick, regards ex-con.

If the crack is just in the area circled then I'm 99% sure it is just thermal movement related & nothing to worry about.

For piece of mind don't skimp on your survey. Most folk buy a house with a survey that is little more than a drive by valuation that mainly benefits your mortgage provider. Pay extra for a proper survey where someone actually gets out of the car & pokes & prods things.

Thanks for your quick responses. I will be getting the full survey just thought it was worth asking the experts before forking out ££.
