Can anyone tell me how worried I should be about this crack? Extends down from bathroom window through the rough cast and then down through the brick below. It’s a house I am thinking of purchasing. The owners state it has not caused any problems or changed but I didn’t like the look of it, especially where it extends through the brick work. Can someone knowledgeable let me know what you think? Thanks

Age of building? Any neighbouring properties showing settlement? Any mining in the area? Any evidence of cracks inside around that area? Any trees nearby?
Anything is possible, but that drain being right in line with the lower cracking could be the culprit. It has to be remembered that over time buildings settle and some even move with the seasons/water table depending on ground composition.
Without being there to see for myself and get a feel for the immediate area, no defined answer can be offered.

Thanks for your reply. Building is 44 years old. No nearby trees. I have not checked neighbouring houses but one house about 5 doors up shows no sign. We are in north east Scotland, the climate is fairly extreme in winter i.e can get down to -15. Home report (Scotland, basic survey done on all houses for sale) states no evidence of recent subsidence.

If the crack is uniform (top to bottom) then its most likely an ex-con crack, seasonal or south facing or some such. The reason it would pop there is that it is a natural weak spot in the structure.
