DIY chimney lining?!

Hi all,

I've just having a open fire fitted in my living room and it turns out that we need to line the chimney. Have heard some scary rumours of this costing £1-2k but the flexible steel liners advertised on ebay and elsewhere on the net don't seem to be that expensive.

Has anyone done the lining themselves? How much did it cost you and how would you assess the difficulty of the job?

If it helps, I live in a Victorian terrace, the chimney stack is otherwise in good nick and I intend to burn wood.

Ive done a few of these. Some liners sail down the flue, others are a right sod, tight bends to get the liner round and blockages to remove. not a job for anyone inexperienced working at heights, its not easy on a roof with 8 metres of lining that needs feeding down the flue, use a scaffold if possible, even a tower to get you up to roof level would help. Thanks biker, the chimney seems pretty straight forward as its pretty clear inside without much of a bend. The height doesn't bother me too much as the stack is close to the apex of the roof and also a sky light.

my main concern would be ensuring that the attachment at the bottom gathers all of the smoke properly. Do they need to be custom made to fit the chimney or is there some other way to seal it?

Just seen that fluesystems have now started making gather hoods to size. I have had to make my own in the past out of tin sheeting or fireboard, these seem a lot easier http://www.fluesystems.com/liners/info/chimney_liner_gathers.htm

Have you considered a woodburning stove, you are going to lose a lot your heat up the chimney with an open fire?
Read somewhere once that with an open fire 70% of the heat goes up the chimney 30% in the room, with a stove this is reversed.
