What conduit to protect last metre of cable to garden spike lights?

My garden lighting is going to have about 8 230v spike lights like this. The cable around the edge of the garden is going to be armoured SWA looping in and out of junction boxes. The flex that's attached to the spike lights are then going to be wired to the junction boxes. What conduit can I...

    Changing from pendant to downlights

If you do go down the downlight route, I highly recommend placing them above furniture and close to walls/cabinets/curtains as opposed to over the areas you walk. This seemed a bit counter intuitive to me at first. And I was used to seeing downlights arranged as a regular grid on ceilings which...

Which housing for LED strip driver in the garden (and sanity check on other bits and bobs)

Hi, I'm hoping to put a 3m run of led strip in my garden and am mainly looking for advice on the driver housing. However, all things told it's looking like this might cost £70-100 just for this 3m run , so I would also appreciate any pointers if I can do this cheaper. I'm thinking of...

Do I need an air gap behind fascia cladding?

I should clarify - the roof overhangs the walls by 200mm. So it's not the rain dripping down the front that I'm worried about. It's that I understand you must have an air gap behind cladding to allow any moisture between the cladding and the wall to evaporate away. So I've created an air gap...

Do I need an air gap behind fascia cladding?

I'm building a shed: stud walls, breather membrane, roofing battens, featheredge. So the roofing battens create an air gap behind the featheredge cladding. I'm going to use some waney edge Douglas fir or larch on the fascia of the roof. Can I nail the single fascia board directly onto the...

Recommendation sought for shelf runner for fancy wine rack

Ha! That's a blinding idea. Shame I'm not in that area. I think that's actually the website where my photo above comes from!

Does it matter if I use 4" or 5" feather edge for cladding?

Thanks guys. Still works out marginally cheaper for me to use more of the thinner boards - not enough to make much of a difference. My main interest is doing it the best way for longevity. But if board width doesn't affect that, then I'll use the thinner boards because it's proving harder to...

No - other side of London. Why what were you thinking?

Does it matter if I use 4" or 5" feather edge for cladding?

Hi all, Supply issues are driving me nuts. I'm going to be cladding a small garden building in treated featheredge. Does it matter whether I use 4" (100mm) or 5" (125mm) boards?

Recommendation sought for shelf runner for fancy wine rack

Those Eurofitdirect prices are hugely lower than the klugs. I was about to hit buy, but then realised there's a problem. My shelf is going to be just a sheet of timber - presumably 19mm (not yet decided on the species or even veneered mdf). The problem with the ball bearing ones is that they...

Recommendation sought for shelf runner for fancy wine rack

Thanks - unfortunately like the blum movento, the tandems require some space beneath the shelf/draw. I'm pretty limited on space, so need one that fixes (mostly) to the sides rather than the underside.

Recommendation sought for shelf runner for fancy wine rack

Hi all, What shelf runners do you recommend? I'm looking for runners for a shelf that will hold a crate of wine, so potentially up to 19kg. The crate will be sideways on - so the shelf will be long (500mm) and shallow (330mm). I love blum's movento runners on drawers, but the downside (aside...

Is it possible to buy framing that's rebated for tongue and groove

Where can I get timber that is pre-rebated to accept tongue and groove? I'm planning to build a small bike shed, basing the design off a neighbour's. It's made with tongue and groove and the tongue and groove boards slot into rebated framing members. It looks very similar to this. Can you get...

BTW, I got my plastic 'joists' from a company called filcris - maybe that's also something to consider?

    Timber roof for playhouse

I'm sticking a playhouse on the top of my shed. What should I use for the roof? I'd like it to be visually clear that the playhouse is just a modest playhouse for the kids - not a two-storey shed or other permanent building. I'll probably use feather edge on the sides of the playhouse, but I...

    Garden room floor

I'm no expert, but was considering a similar thing to you a few weeks ago. Slight difference is that my shed is going to be on 40mm plastic bearers as the floor joists. My floor is going to be P5 chipboard, so I was worried about moisture somehow rising up to the bottom of the chipboard. I...

    Connections question

Hang on - I think I'm being a bit dense. Maybe I can get a garden tap that points straight down. That'd work just fine. Bit more looking required.

    Connections question

Hi, Can you give me a recommendation for a gate valve/tap that: * has a wall fixing or can be attached to wall fixing * output is either horizontal or vertical male 3/4 BSP * input is 15mm supply pipe. ? Background: I'm sorting out irrigation in my garden. The supply will be a 15mm pipe. I...

Seeking experience of Owatrol Textrol or Osmo Natural Oil Woodstain on Cedar

Just spoke to Owatrol. They have two options: Option 1) apply Owatrol Seasonite now (which protects the wood from warping, splitting etc during the first year), then let the wood weather for a year, then clean with Owatrol Net-Trol to remove any silvering, then apply Owatrol Textrol, which is...
