    patching/repairing cast iron soil stack.

Had a bit of an issue over the weekend with a blockage somewhere "downstream" of the toilet. Noticed on saturday morning that there was a pool of water around the cast-iron soil stack - got the missus to flush the loo and water started squirting out of the join near the kitchen window, on...

Insulating around the bay-poles on bay windows.

I recently had new upvc double glazing installed in the house (kommerling i believe) - including two "three panel" bay windows. Although the noise levels have been greatly reduced - i feel there may be more that can be done. The majority of sound seems to be coming from the joins between the...

Beginners cordless combi drill for £150?

In the end i went for a Ryobi combo pack that i found in my local b&q - 18v hammer drill, drill driver and two li-ion batteries for £129... based on the fact ill more than likely need more tools as time goes on..

Beginners cordless combi drill for £150?

Well not really a total beginner - but will be strictly for DIY and renovation use. (house is 1960s so internal walls are brick so will need capability for light masonry work) Currently ive been "coping" with a £5 mcallister screwdriver and an unbranded corded drill that electrocutes me every...

Glazing options Double or Triple for noise suppresion

Im looking into getting the windows replaced in the house as i move round getting it renovated. The current windows are upvc double glazed but 15-20years old - many of the panels have misted, seals have perished and openers have warped/broken. The house is on a road that has become a bit...

    Vaillant 831 + vrc470f - Hints and tips?

Just to update... The curve is currently at 1.7 as it has a habit of overshooting in the evenings, with controls set to modulating. Its currently been taking about 2 hours to get from setback (16c) to the comfort level (19c) in the lounge where the 'stat is. Ive still got some work to do...

    Vaillant - Warranty duration.

Maybe a question for a Heating Engineer to clarify Just had a 831 combi fitted before xmas, replacing an aged gravity system. The original quote for installation shows the boiler having 7yrs warranty - However, having received the paperwork from Vaillant themselves - they are only...

    Vaillant 831 + vrc470f - Hints and tips?

But surely the rules should still apply to a 10-20c temp drop across a rad? (ok maybe less of a delta with a lower flow temp) At the moment the house is mainly fine with lockshields fully open and TRVs on full probably because the rads have apparently been rightsized for the rooms even down...

    Vaillant 831 + vrc470f - Hints and tips?

Sorry to bump the thread.. but ive got a couple more questions. 1) do i need to bother with changing d.0 down to the 12kw or so that my rads can output?. i dont have any issues with boiler cycling. as this model ignites on min output before modulating up high until approaching requested flow...

    Insulating underneath a staircase.

I have a 60's 3 bed semi. Having just had the CH system overhauled, im conscious of various drafts - especially in the hallway. The design of the house means the staircase goes up the side of an external wall, the area underneath the staircase - housing the gas meter is currently only...

Vaillant Eco Tec 937 - Cycling with comfort mode off?

The hourglass is anti-cycling control. If its showing it means CH is calling for the boiler to fire again shortly after shutting off. the default setting is 20min, but i think it varys based on previous modulation and duration. Edit to add: depending on your controls/circumstances - if...

    Vaillant 831 + vrc470f - Hints and tips?

It modulates down quite low - 5kw i believe. it has no problem with the mid-40s flow rate ive seen so far on my 8 rad system, maybe with a bit lower to go. It always fires up on minimum burn and then upregulates as required.

    Vaillant 831 + vrc470f - Hints and tips?

I do have another question.. what is a sensible setback temp to use? previously heating was totally off from 10pm until 5am - for a 6.30 "warm" wakeup. Ive only owned this house for a few months but the lowest temp ive seen on old heating at 5.30 was 13c.

    Vaillant 831 + vrc470f - Hints and tips?

Its not an overshoot - the 'stat is in the living room, currently at its requested temp (20c) - the boiler is currently on, maintaining a flow temp of 39c. Upstairs is showing close to 21c, although usual thermometer inaccuracies apply, but it *feels* warmer when walking into the bedrooms...

    Vaillant 831 + vrc470f - Hints and tips?

Ok, ill switch it back to modulating and work with that. I definitely need to balance the rads though, the upstairs is noticeably hotter than downstairs.

    Vaillant 831 + vrc470f - Hints and tips?

What do you mean by the control?.. Ive got three options that have been covered on this forum many times - "none, thermostat, modulating" I did try it on modulating at first - and that seems it still fires the boiler on minimum output even when the room temperature is met (43c flow 19c...

    Vaillant 831 + vrc470f - Hints and tips?

So ive just had an aged gravity CH system fully ripped and replaced on a 3 bed semi with a Vaillant ecotec 831 complete with new rads and a vrc470c. The installer i chose eventually admitted (after installation) zero experience with these "newfangled technology" boiler controls - so has left...

New boiler install - stick with OE controls?

Looking at getting new CH installed soon. and have been asked the question about boiler controls. I know quite a few people worship the CM927. however am i right in thinking that its doesn't have the ability to modulate the CH output so wouldn't be as efficient as using the controls from the...

Confused about CH system.. seems to be linked to hot water?

Thanks for the help everyone. Ive (slowly) refilled the tank while keeping the hot-taps open and then bled all the radiators.. seems i may have been lucky and not ended up with the CH water mixing with DHW. Ill have a think about what to do next, as im borderline getting the whole system...
