    Insulating Strange Eaves

Hi, I am having trouble thinking how to insulate these eaves. Eventually the loft is being converted, so I need air flowing. I have 100mm insulation at the moment, and the gap between the two bits of wood is also 100mm. If I insulate right upto the wall no air is going to come in by the...

    Strengthening Loft Floor Joists

I thought so, good job I didn't want to take the old joists out! The house is 1903, and I'm quite sure never saw a level or square in its construction! Thanks for the help :D

    Strengthening Loft Floor Joists

I've taken a closer look, and I'm going to have to notch either on top or below anyway. You'll have to excuse my lack of terminology, but there is only 100mm between the timber the joists sit on, and the timber above supporting the rafters. The plan for for the loft is all done up...

    Strengthening Loft Floor Joists

Thanks everybody for your input. In answer to the last question... The span is more or less 3m, plus 10cm bearing at each end. The the current joists vary between 31cm and 32cm between them. I was planning on put these new ones beside the old.

    Beginner taking on downstair toilet...

Biggest thing for myself when faced with a similar situatation wss making sure it is warm enough. If the room is cold and moldy, everybody is going to use the main bathroom anyway. You've not got a lot of room obviously, but a small radiator (either plumbed or electric) and insulation of...

    Strengthening Loft Floor Joists

As part of my “half conversion” of the loft, I have ordered some C16 (45x145mm) to bolster the original 50x100mm joists. The bedroom below ceiling is off, so I have easy access. I have 2 options as far as I can see, as the new joists are taller. 1. Sit this on the wood above the bricks...

    Flooring Sanity Check

I've had a look around for that tape, and nothing has sprung up straight away. Is there a brand name to look out for? Failing that, if I leave myself say 5mm each side, I could silicone the overlapping skirting boards to it?

    Flooring Sanity Check

I am redoing the flooring in our lounge/diner, in our mid terraced 1903 house. As we have moved the stairs we have an area in need of floorboards, then there is also various split/short boards etc about. My thoughts for the floor, to make it sturdy, warm and minimise any noise from...

    Complying With 'Part E' Questions

Not too sure really. Basically we had BCO around to sign off some RSJ's making the house more 'open plan' and ended up with a list of other bits we now seem to have to do. Means of escape windows, extra insulation on the new bathroom ceiling (which is also the roof for that part of the house)...

    Complying With 'Part E' Questions

Is there something particular I need to look for? The joists vary between 310mm and 340mm apart. Can I simply stuff precut 100mm deep 400mm 'loft insulation' rolls into the space? Will it self support long enough for the plasters to board the ceiling, or will I need to staple gun some kind of...

    Complying With 'Part E' Questions

I am struggling to find a definitive answer to this, as searches are mainly bringing up websites trying to flog their own products. This is a residential mid terrace house, that just me & the wife live in. I have two areas where the BCO has told me I need sound insulation. 1. A new stud...

    UPVC Sash Windows

Would anybody be kind enough to let me know if the price we have been quoted for 2 UPVC double glazed windows seems reasonable? The price is from a local company that have been around for as long as I can remember. I've just kicked out a sales man from another company 'which won't quote...

    Matching Imperial To Metric Joists

Thanks for the quick reply. What would be the best material to use for that? I had thought before about using more C16, cutting a 8mm slice to go under it?

    Matching Imperial To Metric Joists

We have moved our staircase to a new location, and are adding the regained space to make the second bedroom bigger. The problem we have is that the current floor joists measure 153mm x 52mm (2" x 6"), but the joists we ordered from Wickes the closest we got was 145mm x 45mm, so they sit...

Crack In Brickwork Behind Old Chimney

Hi, We have taken the plaster off the walls in preparation for it to be boarded and skimmed. Behind where the chimney was before previous owner removed it, and there is a fairly large crack. There was a hairline crack in the plaster over it before, so I assume it is not moving anywhere...

    Basic Loft Conversion Advice

The list is long and sometimes not so easy to achieve, we had to scrap our loft conversion plans as it would mean unacceptable (to us) changes to the ground floor to comply. The big one for us was a protected escape route from the loft to a ground floor exit.

Means Of Escape Vs Child Safety

No particular problem except I could do without the expense of replacing them! The back of the house windows will be best part of 5m above a concrete slab, so all seems rather pointless from a climbing out point of view. If the fire brigade turn up with a ladder, I'd happily let them break the...

Means Of Escape Vs Child Safety

It's a mid terrace, just the ground & first floor. Originally it was "2 up 2 down" with the stairs in the middle. Now they are against the party wall. I wasn't too sure why what we had done means the existing upstairs windows now require changing! Although the stairs have moved, they never...

Means Of Escape Vs Child Safety

We have had the building inspector around to sign off a couple of RSJ's since we opened up the lounge / diner - which were opened up to the kitchen by the previous owners. (The downstairs is basically one huge room now). Apparently due to this, we now have to have ‘means of escape’ windows...

Removing a wall between Kitchen and Living Room and RSJ

We did, but that now gone too (another story)! You need the SE to spec the beam. We opted to get the beam put in by builders, but then took the wall out ourselves after.
