Lifting whole T&G floor in victorian house

Hi Keith, I've just lifted two whole rooms of T&G floorboards in my 100 year old Edinburgh flat. It's not that difficult once you get started. First of all you will need to take the skirting boards off. In my rooms, they originally laid the floor starting at the window and working back to the...

Old water pipes with brass fittings

From the join here, I can get access to the pipework all the way back to the HW cylinder and boiler (downstairs), so I'd hope to replace this middle pipe (HW feed to upstairs bathroom) with copper. As you can see, the joint is leaking. From this point, running back and left from the photo POV...

Old water pipes with brass fittings

Can these old water pipes be joined with modern copper pipes? I'd like to replace part of the large diameter 'old' pipe shown here, but am likely not able to access all of it just now so would need a join. Ian

Single column of brick between door frames

I dont want to dot-n-dab ... really want studs to make it easier to put up shelving, add electrical sockets etc. noseall - yes, the plan is to put 2x4 noggins between the roof joists to fix the top plate to. The bottom plate is more of a problem. This is an old Edinburgh flat, so the space...

Single column of brick between door frames

How do I best repoint and/or strengthen this single column of brick between 2 door frames? If I scrape out the mortar below any brick then it's likely to fall. It's got old crumbly lime mortar between the bricks. I plan to batten the walls before plasterboarding. There will be a new stud...

    What to plasterboard first?

It's the top floor of a stone built Victorian townhouse, so the outside 'wall' is actually a coom ceiling with a pitched roof on the exterior. There is plenty of ventilation from between the sarking boards (there is no roof felt). Ian

    What to plasterboard first?

i have a completely stripped room .... one outside wall, one party wall, two internal walls, and a ceiling (below a flat roof). Is there any preferred order to plasterboard all this? Thanks Ian

    insulating dormer walls

I'm in the process of doing something similar ... but I *did* take the walls down. One issue with pushing insulation in from above is you might break off the plaster nibs, which is the bit that holds the plaster to the lathe. Ian

    Spacing for 2 pendant lights

When I moved in last year, there was no ceiling pendant at all. Someone had wired up one of the wall sockets to the light switch! (Not a proper 5amp circuit). After taking all the plaster off, I found an old steel lighting conduit to a fitting just above the dormer window. And an even older...

    Spacing for 2 pendant lights

The room will either be a study or a spare bedroom (or both!). It's 4.2m front to back (door to outside wall), and 3.5m wide. Outside wall has a partial coom ceiling, and a modest north facing Victorian dormer window. So room doesn't get a lot of light, hence the two pendants. No chimney...

    Spacing for 2 pendant lights

If I put two pendant lights in. A room, how should I space them out between the walls? If I do it equidistant (1:1:1) then it looks too close together. Maybe 1:2:1 or 2:3:2 ... ?

    Floorboard and Brick Gap

I think an expanding floor would easily compress any expanding foam. I plan to use this around the edges of my T&G chipboard floor when I lay it.

    Best laminate stair nose system

Which manufacturer has the best system for a good finish where laminate or LVT meets the top of a staircase? I'm planning on fitting laminate on an upstairs landing after I replace the old 27mm floorboards with 22mm T&G chipboard. The nose of the stair/landing join has an internal corner...

    Cutting 6mm ply

I just made do with 2 sawhorses and one sheet of mdf. It wasn't ideal, but I managed. 4 horses and 2 sheets of mdf just took up too much space. I think also had a Workmate to support the overhanging edge.

    Cutting 6mm ply

Buy two Stanley workhorses, and a sheet of 12x3 22mm mdf flooring to use as a temp workbench (supported by the workhorses). A jigsaw is perfect for odd shapes. For straight lines, quickest way is to clamp a straight edge to the ply, then use either a jigsaw or (better) a small hand held...

    Order of work

Both rooms will be laminate. Good idea to paint walls/ceiling first, then fit laminate, then skirting. Re. Light, I plan to do the wiring myself. It's a single cable from the switch to the ceiling rose. Supply comes from an old junction box under the floor, and up some old steel conduit. The...

    Order of work

I have two rooms that are stripped back to the floor joists, ceiling joists, brick wall, and partition between the rooms removed. Each room has one outside wall and one party wall. The partition ran perpendicular to the outside wall. The party walls were opposite the partition. Whats the...
