First rewire - any advice or books that will help me out ?

Those kind of surprises I can deal with :) Like I said I am abit of a control freak  I just want to research every avenue for info before jumping in.

First rewire - any advice or books that will help me out ?

I may be doing my first rewire soon - a friend needs a rewire on his new house and I need to get jobs for assessment so it would be good for both of us. I am an unpracticed spark having served my time 13 years ago in industry but for many reasons I am now coming back to the trade. I have...

Repossessed property - EDF want a certificate to reconnect

I would phone them and ask exactly what they require. The regs say nothing about being a registered spark, only competant so there is no reason why you can't do it yourself. Unless of course they want someone with insurance, just in case something does go wrong. I suspect they only want a...

Is a landlords cert a full PIR ?

This is exactly why everyone should get a full PIR as standard when buying a house. Very few houses will pass without at least minor work and some will highlight very nasty surprises. After reading up abit more it appears a landlords cert may be the 12monthly check that an agent/landlord...

Is a landlords cert a full PIR ?

I know your right Sparky. But Note 3 also states that "routine checks" must also be made and it is recommended they be done every 12 months. I am trying to get it clear in my head who does these checks. I know that it doesn't need to be done by a spark by in reality I doubt that a letting...

Is a landlords cert a full PIR ?

I can't remember the exact wording from Guidance note 3 but roughly a tenanted property should be PIRd every 5 years (from memory) but a less detailed inspection should be done every year. So to all the sparks out there - if asked to do a Landlord cert every 12 months would you do a full PIR...

What mA would you expect a 30mA RCD to trip at ?

Actually Sparky I said 3-4 hours and I am still having difficulty seeing how a 3 bed semi typical family home will take 8 hours to do a PIR, assuming no problems as the orginal post stated. That said, I will find out and if I am wrong then I will live and learn. I am planning to do a few...

How long to do a PIR ?

Fair enough. This is why I am asking. Any more offers :)

How long to do a PIR ?

I was thinking along the lines of a "typical" property. Normal family, requiring you to move the TV etc out of the way and maybe remove the kitchen fixed appliances. It will be interesting to get a consensus on this. I was thinking along the lines of 3-4 hours !

How long to do a PIR ?

Ok this is a little survey for you guys. A typical 2.4 house. 3 beds semi, 2 living rooms, kitchen and garage etc. How long to do a PIR ? Assume you don't have any problems and are just going through the motions for a Landlord Certificate.

Where to get Switches with words on them

Why not get a "Brother" label printer and print the labels on a clear tape ?

What mA would you expect a 30mA RCD to trip at ?

Great info guys. Thanks alot. This info gives me loads of experience in one big hit without any pain. So thianks to you guys I am learning fast. I am going to do a PIR on this property on Thursday and considering I haven't had a callback yet I suspect the fridge is the problem. That...

help-quick ring circuit question answered urgently plse

Alternatively you can joint the cable under your floor as you have suggested but use suitable jointing methods. One of which is crimping and then putting the crimped joint in a chocbox. There are lots of new joiting gizmo'z coming onto the market recently but I prefer crimping...

What mA would you expect a 30mA RCD to trip at ?

OK I give up. How do you get the delta from character map into the post window ?

What mA would you expect a 30mA RCD to trip at ?

JAckC....thanks mate. I will follow your instructions and tie it down on Thursday. I only got the Metrel last week and haven't even had a play with it yet. SO to get called in on an urgent problem was abit of a downer. Your test sequence makes perfect sense and at least I will tie it down to...

What mA would you expect a 30mA RCD to trip at ?

So they run real close to the 1/2 I delta n test then. Any mA leakage to earth may cause the RCD to fail a 1/2In test in that case. Bloody frustrating to have a possible intermittant fault and not tie it down. Any toher ideas for the intermittant tripping of the RCD ? I am going down on...

What mA would you expect a 30mA RCD to trip at ?

Sounds like a stupid question I know, but in your experience what range of tripping values would you expect ? The story is this. Got a call from a friend earlier, his flat RCD was tripping intermittantly. I did an RCD test ie 1 I delta n, 5 Idn, and 1/2 delta n. The circuit failed on 1/2...

Council requiring only NIC/ECA contractor to do private work

Unless I am misreading it the coucil isn't demanding an NICEIC spark do the work just that they certify it is done properly. Yes I agree the council should not be specifying what body certifies the work but I dont think it is unreasonable to have it certified. Considering that this...

    consumer unit tripping

When you rewired the switch where have you connected the earth to ? Any chance of a photo of the back of the switch ? A wild shot in the dark :? could it be a double pole switch with the earth connected to one pole and the neutral to the other !

    RCD unit keeps tripping!

Why have 2 RCD's in series anyway ? If they are both 30mA RCD's then there is no discrimination. Anyway I doubt a forum is going to solve this problem, sounds like it needs a spark with some testing equipment.
