    Strengthen a floor joist

Coming back to this I had a more detailed look and the two bolts were some kind of hex headed concrete screw. Both were loose in the block and couldn't be tightened properly. I filled the holes with resin and then replaced them. I also did attach an extra length of joist alongside to connect it...

    Taking movement out of rafters

Got some photos now. Photo of the rafters that have slipped. The supporting beam. The rafters that havent slipped. The beam here is supported by two angled pieces whereas the other end isn't

    Taking movement out of rafters

Sorry, I've hurt my leg and can't get up the loft ladder to take photos, that's why I tried to describe it. I've added a drawing from the dormer plans with an arrow pointing to where the issue is. The party wall is brick and there's a 2x4 that runs along the face of the wall, it's fixed to wood...

    Taking movement out of rafters

I have a 1930s semi and keep having a problem where the cement under the ridge tiles keeps falling out and pigeons come in and poo all over my stuff  The bottom of the rafters are nailed to the top of the wall plate. About 1/3 of the way up they are bolted to the top of our dormer roof...

    Strengthen a floor joist

We've recently had an extension finished and the builder has left a new joist fixed in a way that makes me slightly uneasy. It's a dormer and one of the new joists couldn't be sat on the top of the existing wall plate on the internal wall because an existing floor joist from the next room was...

    Siemens dishwasher E24 error

We've had this dishwasher for six years and it has been pretty good to us. 18 months ago we started getting a lot of random E24 errors. This is where three machine can't pump the water out. This is normally something getting stuck round the pump. In the end I replaced the pump because we...

What do I need for building regs sign off?

I've done all the handrails and only have one door to put on (to the bathroom). One room just needs decorating plus radiator and carpet and the bathroom needs starting but was always due to happen later. If I put the door on it then it would just be a second undecorated room wouldn't it? All...

What do I need for building regs sign off?

Thanks. Is there a time limit for me to to get this done? I hadn't planned to immediately finish the bathroom but would need to crack on if all the drainage and rads need to be in for the inspection.

What do I need for building regs sign off?

I recently had an extension built by a building company but not to a finished standard. They did all the electrics, ventilation and hidden plumbing and I've got to put the doors in, add handrails to the stairs, put radiators on and fit the bathroom. The council building control have done two...

    Fixing handrail to newel post

Thanks both, I've ordered some Zipbolt slip fixings. They look like just the right thing for the job.

    Fixing handrail to newel post

I've just had a wall moved upstairs and this has created a landing that I need to put a balustrade on. I've bought everything I thought I needed but am stumped with fixing the handrail to one of the newel posts. I ordered fixing bolts which have a square that you screw into a recess on the...

    Identifying glass in DGU

We've had some building work done and during the process one of our patio doors got chipped. The builder has agreed to pay to replace the unit but wants me to sort out getting the glass on site. Is there any way to identify what coating is on it? I know from having other windows fitted that...

    Scratches on double glaze glass

I had the same thing, a plasterer scratched my french doors when plastering. I was able to use the cerium oxide powder and a felt pad attachment for my drill to get it off. It took about an hour and a half.

    Scratches on double glaze glass

Yes it's possible using cerium oxide to take out small scratches but it takes a long time. I've also used one of those kits that come with different levels of abrasive pad to take out deeper scratches. Again these work but take quite a bit of time and need careful blending so so don't end up...

Fitting windows to a timber framed dormer

Our dormer is almost complete but the builder doesn't do windows. He put me in touch with a local window company and the quote they came back with was incredibly high compared to what we paid to glaze the rest of the house. I've been looking in to fitting them DIY instead as I would save about...

    Obscured side windows

It's just the standard conditions but the letter from the council repeated it twice and in bold.

    Obscured side windows

We are currently having a dormer put on the side of our house and one of the conditions is that the side windows have to be obscured. Since reading that condition I've noticed that none of the houses on either our road or the neighbouring road with the same conversion have fitted obscured...

Help with notches in new joists

The floor joists are next to the ceiling joists, because the loft is an eaves space that’s the only way to do it and match the existing floor levels. The cables run through the centre of the ceiling joists and then drop down under the new floor joists.

Help with notches in new joists

I'm having a dormer put in at the moment and the floor joists went in today. As they were laying a cross an existing ceiling the builder cut notches in the bottom of 7 joists to allow existing cables to pass under without disturbing them. I had thought that notching the bottom of joists wasn't...

    Bathroom extraction help

We have a downstairs shower room that has a loft space above it. When we first moved in the room steamed up and got mouldy so I fitted an extractor. The duct goes in to the loft space then out the roof. I'm having a loft extension done and there is now going to be a full size bathroom directly...
