Simple question: how do you guys fasten the batten?

I'm curious as most tiling guides never really specify this point. Do you usually attach the batten with nails or screws? If screws, do you go trough the trouble of drilling and using wall plugs? If not, are there alternatives? If you nail it, which nails do you use?

    Complications in bathroom project

Here I go answering my own questions as I've done a bit more research on PVA. Answer to my above question is NO. Not underneath tiles, not underneath bathroom paint. See these threads for more: http://www.diynot.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=33645&start=0...

Waterproof cement - looking for the right product(s)

If you look at the picture below you'll see that I had to take out a wooden window sill next to my shower as moisture/damp had started seeping into the plaster. I intend to simply recast a new sill out of concrete by fixing plywood sheet to the wall and fill the empty space. I have been...

    Complications in bathroom project

I've seen elsewhere on this forum that people recommend the PVA applied as a mix that is 25% PVA, 25% emulsion and 50 % water. Could I use this combo in my bathroom as well? I am planning to repaint the whole bathroom anyway, so should I just use a PVA/emulsion mix as a skim coat over the...

    Complications in bathroom project

A round of thanks to everyone for advice so far. Following advice from you guys and other people I removed the entire wooden sill. Seems like a good idea as its underside and edges felt slightly damp. I will now let it dry out a couple of days then I am moving onto casting a sill of...

    Complications in bathroom project

BTW, I am keen to get rid of the wooden sill and recast it in concrete. Can anyone point to good online resources for this kind of small scale concrete casting?

    Complications in bathroom project

Yes there is a bathtub below, but no bath screen. Why? Are bath screens bad in any way? Was thinking of installing one after the refurb. See image below for how it used to be.

    Complications in bathroom project

This morning I started hacking off old tiles in order to re-tile. But at the lower left side of the window the plaster is definitely moist. I suspected this to be honest as tiles were a bit wobbly in that area, but it still is an unpleasant thing to find. I am anxious to find and correct the...

    Ventilation pipes for the fashionista.

A bit of finger wagging eh? Who are you to suggest I don't care about the safety of my loved ones? My problem is that the electric bits are currently CASED IN BY THE BOXING AROUND THE VENTILATION SHAFT. That is NOT my fault, it is the previous owners fault. If I choose to leave this open...

    Ventilation pipes for the fashionista.

When removing the wall cupboards in my kitchen the underside of the boxing for the ventilation pipe from the cooker hood was left open. And that was a good thing really since I now can see that the previous owner made some hasty and stupid solutions. The two pictures blow will hopefully give you...

I presume I will use chipboard?

OK, will follow your advice. Thanks. Seems like Wickes is the best place to get what you describe. But I forgot to ask. Should the batons I use to construct the box be anything special? If not I'll just get some softwood locally.

I presume I will use chipboard?

BUMP OK, so plasterboard it is. Do I need a special kind of plasterboard for Kitchen / Bathroom? Will B&Qs Gyproc boards do? They are ready to be painted straight onto the paper surface right?

I presume I will use chipboard?

I am doing a bit of redecorating in my flat and I want to cover two duct pipes, one in the kitchen and another in the bathroom. The previous owner had cover them with chipboard (which I had to remove) and since chipboard is light and cheap I presume that is what I will use a second time...

Is eggshell so good I won't need tiles on splashback?

I know, I know, not another eggshell based thread you think.... but I can't see that anyone has answered this specific question before. I will paint my slightly tired old bathroom and kitchen in white eggshell either way, just to freshen things up a bit. But the tiles left by the previous...

want glossy white internal doors - what's best value paint?

Thanks for all responses guys! You're the reason why I rate this forum so highly. Thanks to you I am now firmly converted to WATERBASED and SATIN. I realise I already have a small can of Zinsser 123 waiting for me to do the windowsills and windowframes. For that same job I bought some...

want glossy white internal doors - what's best value paint?

In my new flat there are 5 internal doors I want to paint glossy white. Any advice on method and choice of products will be greatly appreciated. I have an overall tight budget for my redecoration, and I've got the impression that using high gloss paint can run quite expensive depending on...
