    Lighting for loft bedroom stairs

We have a converted loft which is a bedroom and my 3.5 year old is soon moving up there but I have some concerns over the lighting. It currently has one pendant bulb in the middle of the ceiling and the light switch is out of a childs reach. There will be some other lighting up there, probably a...

    Damp loft wall

thanks Ree. Yes there is a redundant aerial pole there with no aerial on it (on my side). The "wire" that points up is actually the remnants of what was a beautiful sunflower growing there last summer! (and yes I guess that may have caused some damage to the pointing it was nestled in)

    Damp loft wall

Here are a couple of pictures of the chimney that may be the culprit - anything obviously need attention from this angle? Both roofs are concrete tiles I believe.

    Damp loft wall

Yes they are more or less in line with the chimney. The front room flue is used occasionally, the back room one is never used but ventilated (although it didn't used to be, the bottom was covered with a sheet of plasterboard and thick insulation which I took off a while back in case it was...

    Damp loft wall

thanks ree. I have had the switch open and no visible dampness or water inside. I was wondering about old water in case it was from an old problem that has been fixed - my side of the chimney looks to have been repointed although hard to tell when. Previous owner said they had the flashing...

    Damp loft wall

When we moved in 18 months ago there were some brown patches on the wall in converted loft - previous owner said something along the lines of it had been damp which was fixed but the wall needed some kind of sealing coat to stop the marks coming through. Nothing felt damp or soft (this wall is...

    Another airbrick thread

All the joists I can see look quite new to me - you can still see the green tinge which I assume means it is treated timber. My guess would be these were replaced maybe 5 years ago? There is a definite musty smell coming from down there so I don't believe the ventilation was working too well...

    Another airbrick thread

I have removed a few air bricks today to investigate what is behind them and have some concerns. I have a 1930s semi. There is only 1 air brick at the front which is on the bay window (9x6 original louvered clay). Other houses in the street have at least 2 and some 3 but one has probably been...

    suddenly cold radiators

thanks - had a fiddle last night before reading the above reply. Got two of them to come to life by fiddling with the lockshields - seems all the rads on the system have the lockshield wide open which I guess wont help if there is the slightest blockage or airlock somewhere. I was amazed to find...

    suddenly cold radiators

I replaced a rad and fixed a blockage in the pipe to another a few weeks ago, ran some X800 for a few hours, flushed the X800 out and refilled with some X100 added. Had the heating on a few times since then and all radiators have been nice and hot. This week 3 radiators have decided they wont...

10mm plastic pipe inserts - needed?

I had to cut into some 10mm plastic CH pipe the other day to clear a blockage - took an offcut of the pipe to local DIY store and asked for something to join it back together to which they recommended a push fit coupling. I used this and all is fine - at the moment! I have since realised that...

    Radiator tee'd off 10mm blocked

cool - all back together and the cold rad is now hot, in fact it is hotter than the rad it is tee'd off upstairs now so will need to balance those now. Ran out of time to stick any X800 in so that will have to wait for another day thanks for all the tips :)

    Radiator tee'd off 10mm blocked

I cut it about 1 metre above this elbow and all the stored water above it came sraying out :D It was either the elbow itself or just before the elbow where the blockage was - now clear. My only remaining query is whether to swap the pipes upstairs so the feed goes to both TRVs rather than...

    Radiator tee'd off 10mm blocked

Got some washing line through the top end of the pipe, need to have a go at the other end but there is a stubborn push fit elbow - any idea how to get this off? Maybe better to cut higher up the pipe and rejoin...

    Radiator tee'd off 10mm blocked

ok, I have got the pipe open at both ends and found the blockage somewhere in that 4.5m of plastic. Ill try and find something to poke down it. What I have noticed is the "feed" pipe connected to the TRV downstairs is tee'd into the return pipe (connected to the lockshield) of the upstairs...

    Radiator tee'd off 10mm blocked

I have some x800 ready to go in after I change another rad! When I take off the feed pipe I get nothing coming out at all so it must be blocked somewhere in that 4.5m run. I have traced the upstairs pipes which feed the upstairs rad we are teeing off - it has 10mm copper for about 3m...

    Radiator tee'd off 10mm blocked

My mission for today is to get a downstairs rad working - it currently has no flow (taken pipe off the TRV so not the TRV) so guess the pipe is blocked. This rad is piped with 10mm plastic pipe, each pipe is about 4.5m long going up the wall into the bedroom above and is tee'd into the rad...
