    Wooden fence, wire, staples, why?

I am about to replace a wooden fence in my garden and am contemplating a style. Anyway... I've noticed that lots of wooden fences made with vertical boards have a wire running a few inches from the top stapled to each board. What's it for and why do I want one?

    Drainage problem with outbuilding

Ahh... that helps. At a glance, the issue appears to be where the water is *supposed* to drain to. This isn't entirely obvious. More digging in my future I suspect.

    Drainage problem with outbuilding

I have a substantial brick-built workshop/garage. One wall is letting in substantial amounts of water when it rains and the brickwork is damp. On further inspection, outside there is an earth slope running down (the bad way) at about 30 degrees from the next-door property which is a good...

    Adding Repository In Ubuntu

Copy = Ctrl + C (Ctrl is the key down the bottom left) Paste = Ctrl + V BUT, in the terminal it becomes Shift + Ctrl +C (or V) because Ctrl+C does something else (kills a running programme) You actually don't need the command line. You can use the Synaptic Package Manager which is...

Choice of Lintel(s) for opening between two rooms

Huh? Why the snotty response? If you thought me rude then I apologize. It was not my intention, I'm just not sure what you wanted to see. The outside wall is not involved. It *used* to be the outside wall but is now the wall between the kitchen and a room in the extension. Oh... and...

Choice of Lintel(s) for opening between two rooms

I'm not sure how a picture of a gyproc wall (choice of two) is going to help. Yeh - I think that's the point. I'd rather have something in writing from a structural engineer as it doesn't seem entirely straightforward.

Choice of Lintel(s) for opening between two rooms

I am increasingly aware that I need to find out some stuff about the extension construction but... I want to take out a section of the old external cavity wall. I know the joists are hung on the inner leaf for the upper floors of the original building but I have no idea how the extension...

Choice of Lintel(s) for opening between two rooms

I plan to remove a 1.3m gap between a room in my house and an existing extension. The wall in question is the old outside cavity wall. I know that the "inner"part of the wall supports the upstairs floor joists. I have no idea (yet) how the extension joists are supported. There is no wall...

Some guidance on rewiring a garage/workshop

Yep - floorstanding. Looks a bit manky... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/HILMOR-PIPE-BENDER-GL-FORMERS-GUIDES-/360372682148[/url]

Some guidance on rewiring a garage/workshop

I quite fancy the idea of steel conduit (more tools to buy!!) but I was under the impression that it took quite a bit of practice to get good at putting the bends in the right place? Found a bender just up the road... a GL model. Is 40 quid reasonable?

Some guidance on rewiring a garage/workshop

Thanks for the info... Seems that SWA is out then - I'm not unhappy about that :) My plan was to use 20mm round plastic conduit throughout. Just to add - car restoration etc. is my (reasonably serious) hobby. It's a big brick-built space and is actually quite heavily used. There's a...

Some guidance on rewiring a garage/workshop

I have inherited a bit of an electrical mess in the Garage/Workshop behind my house and am getting around to sorting it out. It's currently wired with a plastic CU (broken and held together with gaffa tape) and then everything else wired with T&E in plastic conduit up and down the walls and...

    Compressor port sizes question

3/8 to 1/4 reducing nipple bought down at Machine Mart. Problem solved. Well THAT problem solved. I just noticed that the thin tube for the (I think) unloading valve is damaged. Now all the fun and games of find the bits to replace that

    Compressor port sizes question

I take it from this that the offending hole is 3/8BSP then? That would be the vital bit of info I was missing. Thanks guys :P

    Compressor port sizes question

I've used a compressor for years without know much about them... The other day the regulator on mine got a smack and broke off. I've removed the broken bits from the tank output port and obtained a new wall-mounted one. The trouble is that I'm not sure how to connect the two together. The...

Wiring a wooden summer house - advice appreciated

I don't know, I quite like that feeling of proper engineering you get with SWA

Wiring a wooden summer house - advice appreciated

It was this kind of thing I was concerned about - movement and dampness. Is circular/oval plastic trunking a better idea or should I just go mad and do the whole job in SWA? I'll need to change the c/u in the garage. It's doesn't have an RCD currently which is a bit mental for a garage I...

Wiring a wooden summer house - advice appreciated

Strange you should ask, actually. I would say several time a week on average. Not the answer you were hoping for I would imagine  I just asked what the best way was to wire a wooden outbuilding from another outbuilding. I suspect I have the skills and intelligence to do it but I...
