    Media wall recessed electric fireplace

Hi all, I'm considering building out a media wall unit on my chimney breast. I don't want to encroach too much into the room so thinking 140/150mm max depth. I want to install an electric recessed fireplace unit, but I cannot seem to find any that are less than a 140mm depth back unit. Is there...

    Chimney breast 'part' removal?

Hi all, I am trying to find out if it's possible to remove say 75% of a ground floor chimney breast (dining room) to avoid having to have a large RSJ installed. I was chatting to a guy who said a relative of his had something like this done where he said there was some sort of staggered part of...

Water pressure issues - any advice please?

Hi all, I have been experiencing some water pressure issues that seem to be getting worse. We live in a 1930s semi, three-bedroom, and water pressure has generally been good. However, over the past few months, I have noticed that whenever there is water running downstairs (e.g., washing machine...

    Chimney breast removal advice

Hi all I am thinking of getting the chimney breast removed in my dining room to open up a bit more space. It's just an early consideration at the moment. I was wondering how long the work would typically take (removal/steel installation/finishing works). It's a 1930s house. The breast is 1.4m...

    Pressure Washer for decking/driveway

Hi all I am looking to hire a really good pressure washer to give my decking and driveway a really deep clean. Do you have any recommendations on type/model? I saw one of my neighbours get theirs done by a company, and the washer looked like a hoover and really restored the drive. I have looked...

haha the answer is yes! My guess is its a hidden build up given no clear blockage issues. Any suggestions on a product that helps clear through (assuming the standard ones in the supermarket are not industrial enough!)

Bad smell from toilet when water disturbed

Hi all, Over the past couple of months, I've noticed that our downstairs toilet lets off a bad smell when the water in the basin is disturbed, i.e., you take a whizz in it it chucks up a bad drain-like smell. There doesn't appear to be a blockage as it flushes fine. The soil pipe for the toilet...

Dishwasher and using all in one tablets query

The engineer was sent from Smeg (albeit I assume he was a subcontractor). The instructions naturally say to use salt as it softens the water. But the engineer was saying the salt in the all-in-one tabs is enough and adding salt and using all-in-ones causes too much salt in the water during a cycle.

Dishwasher and using all in one tablets query

Hi all, Recently noticed that our Smeg dishwasher didn't seem to be dispensing rinse aid - usually needs topping up once a month but not needed for a while and also noticed glasses were looking a bit more misty than usual. Called out an engineer as we have appliance cover and he said that with...

    Chemical cleaner/flush advice

Hi all I am going to install a magnaclean device and thought this would be a good opportunity to clean through the radiators/pipes. I don't have time to take the rads off or do a full machine flush so I was just going to circulate some Sentinel X800 and then drain down the system before fitting...

    Drain valves Baxi combi

This might be a silly question but do I need to turn off the mains water supply when draining? The boiler has two knobs that turn to let water back into the system so they seem to stop any water entering unless turned.

    Drain valves Baxi combi

Hi all I am looking to drain down my radiators but there is no drain valve on any of my radiators. There are however what appear to be two drain points on the flow and return pipes coming out of the bottom of my Baxi Combi boiler - photos attached. I am assuming these are the drain valves for...

    Magnetic filter recommendation

Hi all I am looking to get a magnetic sludge filter to fit on my central heating system. The most common one when I search is the Adey Magna Filter, however, Screwfix also sell a Flomaster branded one that is half the price of the Adey Magna Filter brand. Only difference I can see is the more...

Boiler service bit of advice needed please

Hi all just after a bit of advice. I've just contacted a local gas engineer to get my boiler serviced and was quoted the standard expected price, but then he asked a few questions about the age of the boiler and when I told him it was 10 yrs old he said would need a different type of service...

    Stop creaking stairs 1930s house

Hi all Looking for advice how to fix/stop creaking stairs. We live in a 1930s house so the stairs are pretty robust but gradually over the past few years the creaking has become worse. I've looked under the stairs and the previous owner had already put in some wedges so not sure what the next...
