    Sourcing timber

Thanks. I haven't got the facilities or skill to machine my own timber, unfortunately! I might take the coward's way out and buy pre-made. Jeld-wen are quite reasonably priced.

    Sourcing timber

I want to make some "cottage style" internal doors from tongue & groove softwood. Can anyone advise me on sourcing good quality timber which won't crack, warp or shrink within a few months?

    Tiling over floorboards

I want to lay tiles over existing floorboards in my hallway. One way to do this according to my research is to first cover the boards with plywood to give a flat even surface. Given the current high cost of plywood I was looking for alternatives and came across Metsäwood Compressed Wood Strands...

    Wall thermostat question

I have a standard wall thermostat - square with a round dial. If I make it look less obtrusive by embedding the depth into the wall, will it still work effectively?

    Rotten bow-window sill

Thanks - a bit belatedly! (I ticked the box to notify me by email when I get a response, but that doesn't seem to work).

    Rotten bow-window sill

Here's the sill I've been repairing for years, and have finally come to the conclusion that I'll have to replace it!! Will I be able to buy a replacement for this sill, or will I have to fashion it myself? Are there any existing topics on this forum which could show me the best way to replace...

    Replacing a Mira power shower

No - I would be replacing like-for-like with an updated version of the shower (ie. not electrically heated). Thanks for your responses.

    Replacing a Mira power shower

My plumber told me he would need to get an electrician to install a local RCD unit if he was to replace the shower. Is this really the case considering that I have recently replaced my old fuse box with an up to date RCD consumer unit?

    Spray painting question

I want to use some Morrison's acrylic spray (indoors) and it says on the can to do it between temperatures of 15 - 25 degrees. As I'm currently in Greece, and I can't get my room temperature down below about 29 C, what would be the consequences of doing the spraying anyway?

    Painting new plaster

Thanks for responses. It says "Seal absorbent surfaces with a solution of one part water to 5 parts" of the paint. Although the plastering took place only a few days ago it's already dried out to a nice bright pink colour. I'd like to do the painting at the weekend unless anybody tells me...

    Painting new plaster

I've just had a ceiling skimmed and want to paint it. I have some Homebase Value vinyl matt emulsion (brilliant white) left over from another job. Would a thinned down version of this be suitable as a first coat?

Central heating OK, but no hot water

I have gas central heating on a standard (non combi) boiler. The CH is fine, but the hot water system suddenly stopped working. What would cause this? (I'm currently using my backup electrical immersion heater, which is expensive!)

    Stoves oven

I have a Stoves fan-assisted electric oven which is probably the best part of 10 years old. It has recently appeared to be working less efficiently, ie. things take longer to cook. Is this just an inevitable result of an ageing appliance, or could I do something about it? I did recently clean...

    2 way ceiling swittch

I bought a replacement for my bathroom pull switch and after opening the packet realised it was a 2 way switch. Can I wire it for an ordinary one way switch? There are 3 terminals. L1, L2 and COM.
