    2 way dimmers (again!)

Hi All, Quick question about 2-way dimmers: Can I have a dimmer on both switches for a 2 way lighting circuit or do I need to have a normal switch at one end ? Thanks, P.J.

    Cavity closers and d.p.c.

Closers installed - cavity was well variable in width, down to about 60mm at the base from 75mm elsewhere. Closer squashed fairly readily into place. Dabbed plasterboard on top and finished reveal with a corner trim before skimming. Sorted - thanks for your help. P.J.

    40mm waste pipe underground

Thanks for all the advice. My waste goes: Sink, 2.5M of waste pipe, washing machine trap, out the wall and under ground, 3m of waste pipe, tap into rainwater drain. I'll bed the pipe in well and if I get a gurgle at the sink, I'll fit an anti-syphon trap after. Thanks for all your help...

    Central heating control

Hi All :D , I have a very old Thorn EMI gas boiler, wall mounted in the kitchen with a hot water tank. It has the control panel with timer on the front of the boiler. I don't want to change the boiler just yet as it's running fine but I do want to improve the level of control I have over...

    40mm waste pipe underground

Hi All, I need to run some 40mm waste pipe from a sink/washing machine out the wall and then about a foot underground for 3m to the gulley (to pass some french doors). Is that OK practice and do I need to bed it in something in particular like sand ? (I can get the required rate of fall to...

    Cavity closers and d.p.c.

I've had real trouble finding them in the builder's merchants (not B&Q!). Only one has them and they stock 2", 3" and 4". My cavity is 70/65mm so I expect the 2" to be too small and the 3" to be too big. Good point about not needing a dpc, but if I was stuck, could I cut polystyrene to size...

    Cavity closers and d.p.c.

Hi All :D , I'd like some help on 2 issues please: 1. I can't find cavity closers the right size in my area. I've created a new external doorway in a brick/block cavity wall. Can I just cut some polystyrene bats to size and slot them into the cavity, then wire mesh round the reveal and...

Replacing a kitchen window with french doors

Chappers, I'm thinking that 10 to 15mm of exposed cut edge, while not ideal, is a lower risk than having bricks and mortar that don't match the original (I've got some dodgy extentions round my way!). What are your (and everyone's) thoughts on his please ? Cheers, P.J.

    Blocking up external doorway

Hi All, I've searched for this but couldn't find what I'm after. I'm bricking up an external 900 x 2100 doorway - I'm doing the block inner leaf and a pro's going to do the outer leaf. I've a few questions: 1. With the door gone, I have a concrete screed floor at the base, can I lay the...

Replacing a kitchen window with french doors

Chappers, Wise words, thanks very much. The photos would be greatly appreciated. Actually, that brings me onto a couple of bricklaying questions: If you disturb a brick, say round a doorway, so you can tell the mortar/brick joint has been broken, how can this be repaired ? Also, when...

Replacing a kitchen window with french doors

Hi All, The french doors I have are to fit 1200 wide openeing, but the opening is 1340. I can cut the wall out below the window to 1200, but should I remove the outer leaf bricks that will need replacing in order to reduce the opening width before I fit the french doors, and is it feasible to...

Cutting a channel in a concrete floor.

Update on the channel cutting : Using a 115mm angle grinder with diamond cutting wheel. I just cut one slit for each side of the channel and then chopped the middle out using a cheap impact drill with chisel attachments from B&Q (£30). The dust was a nightmare but quickly clears and I found...

    French

Hi All, I'm fitting french doors where my kitchen window used to be and I've a couple of issues. The opening is about 1340mm wide and I'd like to cut that straight down and fit a similar width unit. B&Q have a 1200mm unit for about £400, but I'll have to build up each side of the wall to fill...

Cutting a channel in a concrete floor.

Thanks very much - sounds like it's more or less the right method with the dust being the main problem. Nice point about cutting a few slots with the grinder first  Got myself an 850W chisel action drill so hopefully that will see off what's left in the channel after the slots are...

Cutting a channel in a concrete floor.

I have a concrete ground floor - 1980's 3 bed detached house. I need hot/cold water supply and waste water connection for an island kitchen sink unit and plan to cut a channerl in the floor to carry the pipes in a rectangular plastic conduit. Then screed back over the top. Floor will be...

Cutting a doorway in a brick and block cavity wall

Thanks JerryD. By 10" I meant the 230mm disc (yes that's closer to 9", I should know that as a mechanical engineer! ) - thanks for advice. The doorway is going on an outside wall. There will eventually be a utility area outside this door, but not yet. Am I missing something ? The...

Cutting a doorway in a brick and block cavity wall

Thanks for that oilman - I'm looking into it but my nearest Arbortech hire centre is a fair way away. If I was stuck with the old angle grinder approach - what size should I go for ? Is there another method other than these 2 ? Cheers, P.J.
