Good question, i'm interested in using Cat5 for an alarm system too. I'm guessing it would work 100% fine (we use Cat5 for allsorts of stuff at work, including sending analogue audio and video down the cable), any experts got a definite response on this?

Yes, in these areas the plaster was "bubbling" on the wall. When touching the plaster, it flakes off the wall, to reveal the crumbling areas in the blocks. I've included one below, please let me know if you need any higher quality (was taken off a camera phone :)) Nah it's in Hull :)...
