Concrete with glass fibre additive......is it worth it?.

Unless someone said you need it, its not worth the extra. Also, with troweling the floor finish, you may want to have concrete put on a bit lower and use levelling compound to finish it off smooth. Otherwise you may find that your idea of a well finished floor is different to a builder's.

Cavity Closer - Are these really necessary?

We are just about to put in a large door and window in extension and have a question regarding cavity closers. Its a 75mm cavity with full fill Dritherm 32 insulation. I got some cavity closers from local builder's merchant. It basically looks crap - its a thin bit of polystyrene wedged...

Rigid foam insulation bowed - is it ok to put screed on top

Does anyone have any thoughts on the following problem. I've just put down 100mm polyisocyanurate boards on the concrete floor in preparation for screed. Problem is insulation was stored in the house for last 6 months and over that period its bowed so instead of straight boards they are curved...

    Velux windows and building regulations

To answer the questions 1) Yes, they will. They are optional extras. For example, I asked Velux what is the U-value of window with and without the insulation collar and the answer is the same. 2) The trimmers have to be put in same position with and withouyt the triimmers 3) I believe no...

UFH on screeded floor - Staples or System plates

Floor area is around 40sq meters. System plates I am talking about are just plastic boards - not insulating boards. They go on top of the insulation and just provide anchor points for the pipe. I do like your idea of mesh - I haven't seen anyone offer this though as a fixing option. While I...

UFH on screeded floor - Staples or System plates

I am about to order wet underfloor heating for our screeded floor area. As far as I can see there are two ways of laying pipes in screed - either using "plates" where the pipe sits on a plastic mat and wraps around preformed moulding or using staples which just push into insulation at regular...

    Window reveals - insulation

What is the general advice on insulating window reveals where there are brick returns rather than a gap around the reveals and the house has insulated cavity wall. From what I understand, choices are: 1) PUR board insulation around the brick return followed by plasterboard. The problem with...

    Concrete floor construction

    Concrete floor construction

Is it ok for floor to be constructed in the following way Sub-base - hardcore + sand above that kingspan insulation board direct onto sub-base above that visqueen sheet above that concrete slab (no screed) Specifically, I am not sure about PUR insulation board being put directly onto...

Joints in screed / concrete slab

I have a floor area thats L-shaped with long sides being 6 and 7meters and width of the floor at 3m. Should I be concerned about having any sort of expansion joints put into floor at that size? The concrete slab has been laid already with builder not really doing anything other than just...

    Oak Kitchen Worktops

Any thoughts on how suitable oak kitchen worktops are for a family with 3 small children (<4). We prefer the feel of wood compared to laminate/granite/composite/etc and are not too fussy about them looking like new so if they stain after a while its not a problem. Its really a question of...

Water Underfloor heating - which make

I thought that the blending valve is only required if you have an old boiler?

    Door, which side to open

On our 1930s house all the doors opened inwards obscuring the room. I have been told by our architect that was the old way - it was to protect privacy of the occupants - in the same way as all light pendants were off centre towards the windows. As we renovated throughout we had a chance to...

Normal blocks or clay - worth paying extra?

I am doing my drive paving myself as we speak and its not rocket science - there are plenty of guides on internet, you can hire all the tools you need, you just need to take your time with everything. You could also try and get a compromise - you do the digging, preparation and the paving...

Structural roof lights - weathering & building control

They are not installed yet so he can't be unhappy with installation - they are sitting in the kitchen waiting to drop on someone. As far as me getting confused - I have it in writing! He's asking for flashing detail on the rooflight from manufacturer. The bit about Part C he mentioned in...

Structural roof lights - weathering & building control

I have recently purchased fairly large rooflights to fit on pitched extension roof (20% pitch) They are basically 2mx1.4m triple glazed glass units with structural timber box section as upstand. There is nothing more clever to them - no clever flashing kit, its just timber frame and glass - they...

Water Underfloor heating - which make

40kw boiler was recommended by the plumber. its a 4 bedroom house so we were quite surprised but he felt anything smaller will be inadequate.

Water Underfloor heating - which make

Water Underfloor heating - which make

We are looking for water underfloor to install in our kitchen/dining area (around 30 sq m). Looking on internet and in local plumbers merchants there is quite a few different companies offering what sounds like a pretty similar product. They all offer similar warranties and prices are in the...

Alternative to lead flashing - ikoflash

Are there any alternatives to lead flashing where a good seal is absolutely imperative. I have to get 2m long section on a large rooflight flashed so its watertight. Roofer is telling me he needs to put expansion joints in and it will be hard to make it fully watertight. Company which makes...
