    How to paint this wall

Stripped lining paper off and filled lotsa holes/cracks but, as you can see, the plaster is all different colours and materials probably. What's thr best way to prepare this for painting. I don't wanna use lining paper so is there a base coat that would do the job or should I go to the expense...

    925x825 corner base kitchen unit

Thanks Tet. I seem to have the same problem with sourcing 200mm doors. Do they exist at all?

    925x825 corner base kitchen unit

Thanks for the detailed explanation J&K but I see you've given the thumbs up to Foxhole's suggestion of a 2 part corner unit. Am I right in thinking this would entail a 'blind' 800mm corner unit (with a 300 door) and a standard 200mm unit set at right angles? Would this not entail having a...

    925x825 corner base kitchen unit

Hi all, I have run into a particular problem with my kitchen design. The back wall is 2240 from tiles to tiles I reckon the tiles and adhesive take up at least 5mm. I'd like to fit 2 corner base units either side of a 600mm oven housing. Would it be possible to cut 100mm off each 925x925 corner...

    Oiled or unoiled?

Hi, looking at butcher block worktops and find that preoiled ones are around £50 more expensive than unoiled. Is the extra expense worth it?

    Door replacement

I've got a back door and an o/s loo (barn-type) door that need replacing. The door frames are damaged too and will probably need replacing rather than repairing. Should I go for hardwood or UPVC for the back door and how much should the job cost (supply & fit)?

    Repair or replace old ceiling?

Guy told me he'd find the joists. Half the plaster will be off the ceiling anyway so surely he'll just draw a straight line from the exposed lath to find the centres of the joists which are covered in plaster no?

    Repair or replace old ceiling?

Just hired a guy to remove the blown plaster, pack out from the lath to the level of the original plaster, overboard that and apply 2 coats of plaster. He's gonna do that, overboard and plaster another (artexed) ceiling upstairs and the same for the ceiling of the understairs cupboard for £750...

    Repair or replace old ceiling?

Hi all, the plaster on the ceiling in my living room has seperated from the lath. What's my best option? I guess it could be repaired but maybe getting a firm to board and plaster may be the way to go. If so, what should I be paying and are there any specific things I should know before hiring a...

    Loft insulation

I currently have 100mm loft insulation just to the top of the joists. It looks very dark and dusty but does that matter? Can I not just roll out 200mm insulation at a right angle to the joists thus giving me the 12 inches of insulation which will score top marks on the EPC? Also, which is the...

Plasterboard to fix under stairs cieling?

Thanks Freddie. There is. Just hacked off some more plaster in 2 places and found some battening right in the middle. So am I good to go? Not used plasterboard before. I'm guessing just cut to size, fix with plasterboard screws and skim with some ready mixed stuff? Any tips?

Plasterboard to fix under stairs cieling?

Hi all, I've got a knackered lath and plaster sloping understairs cieling with great lumps of plaster missing and other plaster just hanging on. Rather than hack off and replaster, I am considering putting up plasterboard. Will it be OK to screw some battening to the walls at cieling level and...

    What's this?

Thanks Random. So, should I just strip it off, skim the plasterboard and paint over that or should I replace the thermally lined paper? The house is a seni of 1880s construction with solid brick walls. The EPC says insulating outside walls would cost 4-14,000 quid so I doubt they mean 18 quid a...

    What's this?

Hi all, Just peeling off some ancient, curling up at the seams, lining paper and I find some polystyrene backed plasterboard underneath. This stuff seems to be on (the inside of) all the downstairs exterior walls only. I guess it is some form of insulation but it has peeled offin some places...

Hi all, I have a very small kitchen, made all rhe snaller by having a doorway to the outside yard within the kitchen. I intend to replace the kitchen units but before I do I would like to make some reformations to the layout. There is a standard window in the back room which I would like made...

Efect on EPC rating of installing High Heat Retention Storage heaters in place of 'warm air electricaire' system.

Thanks for he replies. It does seem a very nebulous exercise Eric, I've been through most of the 68 EPCs relating to the flats in the development I intend to buy in and the same assessor, on the same day has given different ratings for the 'warmair electricaire' system the development was built...

Efect on EPC rating of installing High Heat Retention Storage heaters in place of 'warm air electricaire' system.

Hi, I am considering buying a flat which has an EPC rating of 68 (D). The EPC was carried out 9 yrs ago and I am concerned that values attributed to the variables involved may have become more stringent. https://find-energy-certificate.service.gov.uk/energy-certificate/8407-6422-6959-9740-7922...

    Telford tempest water heater

Thanks Adam. I was showing my ignorance there. I noticed there was no header tank but did not put 2 + 2 together. of course, the water pressure has to come from somewhere. I didn't run any taps either. I just assumed the pressure would be weak. Another viewing needed I think. I think the...
