    Rising damp?

You're right John, the damp patch starts about 1m from the floor. The small patch on the right hand side of the picture is also damp and seems to be just to the right of where I would imagine the old (removed) chimney breast was. It is a party wall and the folks next door have a large cupboard...

    Rising damp?

Hi again, just resurrecting this thread with some new info. I have inspected the pipework to the kitchen rad and all joints seem watertight. I then lifted up a board near tha damp wall and found it quite damp: Also, there was damp sandy debris piled up in the sub-floor corner, so much so that...

    Laptop wont boot

Thanks all. I guess the hard drive is faulty, and I'll need to source a new one, but having taken the back off to access the drive, I cannot see any plug comnected to ( what I would describe as) the power connection. (Those 4 pins at the exterme right). I cannot see a spare plug either, but that...

    Laptop wont boot

Thanks Ross. I do have access to another laptop - my girlfriend's. It's not Windows 10 though (7 I think) will that matter? If not I'll give it a go later today. Also, a couple of related questions: Must I use a DVD? I don't think I have one but I do have a 16G mem stick free, and will I lose...

    Laptop wont boot

Hi all? All of a sudden I get this: Rather than my home screen. Og the options listed, I have no recovery devices to use. Troubleshoot brings me to this screen: Reset does nothing and Advanced options gives me this screen: None of which seem to do anything. The only option which seems...

Faulty Beko AeroPerfect™ BBRIF22300X Built In Electric Single Oven?

Thanks JJ, Peeled it off and now my girlfriend is very happy. P.S. We had already sent one back for the same 'fault'. BTW, big shout out to AO.com who replaced the original oven on a next day basis.

Faulty Beko AeroPerfect™ BBRIF22300X Built In Electric Single Oven?

Hi All, I've bought the above oven and it is fine apart from the digital display. The display seems to be coated with some plastic material which has a couple of bubbles between the coating and display. Is this normal and is the coating something that can be safely peeled off? Thanks for...

Damp wall. Could it be a leak in the roof?

Hi KenGMac, and thanks for your input. Yes the chimney stack is still there and I can see two (of the four) pots. Both have what I would describe as 'inverted Vees' on top of them. I guess the other two do as well but I cannot say for certain. There is no lead flashing around the chimney stack...

    Rising damp?

Hi, and thanks for the input. The floor is wooden floorboards. There is a radiator on an adjacent wall in the same room but the pipes don't go near the damp wall, they are about 3 feet away from it. The mains water comes through this room, but that pipe is about 7 feet away from the wall. I...

    Rising damp?

Hi all, I have 2 damp patches in a downstairs party wall which get noticeably worse when it rains. The neighbours have no damp at all on their side of the party wall. I have started a similar thread on the Roofing section as I did have some work done on the roof last year for a patch of damp...

Damp wall. Could it be a leak in the roof?

Hi all, Last year I had a damp patch in an upstairs back wall just below the height at which the back addition joins the main house. I got a roofer in and he replaced a few cracked tiles and some rotted felt which seemed to fix the problem. Now I have 2 damp patches in a downstairs party wall...

    Vinyl stained within a year

Seems reasonable John. The marks look the size and shape of tiles. I guess I'll have to remove, clean, and replace with fresh vinyl. As to cleaning any old glue off, is there any solvent or method you would recommend?

    Vinyl stained within a year

Hi all, I let out a flat and last year, while it was between tenancies, I gave it a makeover. One of the jobs I did myself was to freshen-up the bathroom, including laying a new sheet of vinyl. I remember the concrete floor underneath the old vinyl being a little uneven so I leveled it with...

    Hotpoint washing machine (FDD9640) problem.

MYSTERY SOLVED! Thanks for all the advice guys but my girlfriend has just found the answer. A pillow (used mainly by the cat) had developed a tear and the little white deposits were nothing more than PILLOW STUFFING! A clear case of making the poor assumption that the deposits were washing...

    Hotpoint washing machine (FDD9640) problem.

Hi Johnny & John, Thanks for your input. As to amount of washing powder, I used the same amount as always - one scoop. I can't remember if the washer was hot after the whites wash, but it certainly wasn't immediately after all the darks washes, and they were supposed to be 40 degree washes, so...

    Hotpoint washing machine (FDD9640) problem.

Hi all, Got a strange problem here. Having just done a whites wash fine, I used the same powder to do a darks wash and, after the cycle was finished, I ended up with tiny white deposits on the clothes. The little white deposits are also in the washer itself, particularly on the rubber seal I...

    Gas heater removal

The flat is on the second floor so no chance of hacking away at outside mortar. I guess the flues will have to stay. Perhaps the insallation of circular airbricks in the exposed flues (rather than blocking them up) would be the best way forward.

    Gas heater removal

You are right guys (gals). I need them gone but was shocked at the price quoted for their removal by the electrician who will be installing the replacement heaters. Got them on ebay too with 1 'watcher' - fingers crossed. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/233624719019 By the way Fireman T, you are...

    Gas heater removal

Hi all, I have a couple of (fully functional) wall mounted 'Baxi Brazillia' gas heaters which need removing. I appreciate this work needs to be done by a Registered Gas Installer, so would any RGIs living in the south London (Sutton) area like to take them off my hands?
