    Flow Rates

I've tried to search previous topics and other internet info but have only served to get confused. I am in the process of gutting my bathroom and moving certain items around. While I will get a plumber for some of the work I do intend to undertake some of it myself. Somebody stated that...

Why does central heating water go black?

Thanks for all the advice so far. A few weeks ago Vaillant had to replace the Heat Exchanger, which wasn't working correctly. I wonder whether this was due to magnetite. They have offered to come and check the water for free, which I will certainly take up. I've also had to add water to...

Why does central heating water go black?

We has a new Vaillant combi boiler fitted 3 years ago and I watched the plumber completely flush the whole system until the water was running clear. I have just removed a radiator and emptied the contents noticing that the water was completely black but without sludge. So why does the...

    Drainage

I suppose if I get the hosepipe turned on down one of the drains I could see if the water level in the pump chamber rises provided it doesn't pump as fast as it fills. So if these drains are running to the pump chamber then it's OK for the sink waste etc. to go into these drains?

    Drainage

Not sure if this is the right forum or should be in the builders section. I have 3 questions please. 1. I have just been clearing leaves and silt out of the drain beneath the gutter downpipes and have used a high pressure jet in this process but no matter how much water goes down the water...

    Outdoor socket to ring main?

OK, lots of good advice here. I do have access to where the junction box could be fitted through a trap that I previously created next to these sockets and as long as we are in this house (probably till my coffin is required) we will not be covering the access with hard flooring as it's a lounge...

    Outdoor socket to ring main?

When did that come in? I'm not trying to be funny, it's a serious question. I'm not an electrician but have learnt what I do know from books, which I still have, and this is advocated. No. It would mean having to gain access underneath the floorboards of 3 rooms and the CU is at the other...

    Outdoor socket to ring main?

I forgot to draw in the floor inside the house. The cables for the sockets are run in the wall (and I'm not going to redecorate). The junction box would be underneath the floorboards for the simplest method of getting a spur off of the ring and would exit the wall below the floorboards. There...

    Outdoor socket to ring main?

Can anyone tell me please whether this proposed way of getting an outside socket in the garden for my pond would be OK. If it makes any difference the length of SWA cable from FCU to socket would be about 4 metres buried at the appropriate depth. The socket, attahced to a brick wall, would...

    Mortar mix for valley

Quite a bit of the mortar that points the ends of the cut tiles on my valley had come off last year so I repointed them. However, I obviously did a crap job because some of it has come loose again. It may have been that I didn't use the correct mortar mix (not that I can remember what I did...

    Strange Alarm Sounding

This morning at 3.30am I was woken by the sound of our external alarm sounder  , the internal was not sounding. It sounded for a minute or so and during this time it was as if someone was holding the 12v cable on the connection point but not very steadily if you can imagine the noise...

    Arctic Cable?

This old photo may help. The Weatherproof RCD socket is fitted to the stand where the hosepipe reel is. On the ground between the stand and the greenhouse is aggregate. What about if I cover it with one of those cable cover strips? Or any other suggestions.

    Arctic Cable?

So I'll be fine if I leave it on top of my aggregate?

    Arctic Cable?

When I said it will be plugged in all the time, that's not quite true, I will want to be able to unplug it a couple of times a year to plug in my hedge trimmer. There will only be about a metre of cable outside I can run it through some conduit and cover with some aggregate. There's only me and...

    Arctic Cable?

Do I need to use arctic cable from an outside (switched) socket to my greenhouse? The length of cable would be no more than 3 metres but probably closer to 2 metres. It would be left connected to the socket all of the time. Don't know if it makes a difference but I live in Yorkshire so the...

    Size of foundation for pillar

What size of concrete foundation would I require for a freestanding brick built pillar measuring approx. W33cm D33cm H183cm? Something like this.

    What size cable?

Don't know I haven't bought one yet but I get the idea, I'll leave plenty of cable to give myself that option. Just somewhere near the patio. I think I've sorted that though. If I use a switched FCU then I can just turn it on and off from there.

    What size cable?

No, the lampost would have flex but I'm obviously going to have to run SWA underneath the patio. There's no CU in the shed (it is actually a very large kennel). The two sockets are supplied from the RCD CU in the house via T&E to a junction box where it is connected to the SWA to go underground...

    What size cable?

 Very funny. Should have said shed instead of kennel. I thought it probably would be notifiable as soon as you start laying cables in the garden. I intend to use SWA underneath a patio that I have yet to lay and was thinking of connecting this to flex for the plug using a junction...

    What size cable?

I have a 35m cable length radial circuit from the RCD side of the CU to a kennel in the back garden with 2 double sockets at the end. I want to connect a lamp post to this supply (100w bulb max) preferably by plugging the lamp into a socket through one of those remote sockets. When...
