Pad Foundation under corner of House ?

Hi, I've just started digging the foundations for a 3m x 6m pitch roof kitchen/diner extension and had the 1st visit by the Building Control officer. I'm going to be doing most of the work myself and as I'm not a builder I have to get people to explain things to me in simple language rather than...

upvc door connected to French Windows

Hi, I am planning a full width kitchen/lounge extension and am thinking of fitting an 800 wide upvc door hinged to the left 840mm brick return as the main exit door to the rear of the house, then fitting a pair of 900mm French doors with fixed windows either side in the remaining 4260 mm space...

    Dogs & dirty kitchen walls

So there I was in B&Q just about to pick up a tin of Dulux Kitchen+ when a salesman asks if he could help and after I explained that I wanted to paint kitchen walls and be able to wipe them down after the dog he said forget Dulux Kitchen+ and buy Valspar as it was much better. So I come home...

    Dogs & dirty kitchen walls

The dogs have ruined the wallpaper in the kitchen when they have been either lead against it or rubbing on it when going in/out the doorway so I'm going to take it all off and sort the room out, it's overdue decorating anyway. They will probably ruin the new wallpaper so I was thinking of...

    Double sided tape

thanks, I didn't realise I would need to do that, lots of good info on google so thanks for the heads up :) Presumably its only the double glazed unit that needs it, the lower plastic panel won't have any weight so I assume the lower panel goes in the door first and the glass last once its...

    Double sided tape

I have just acquired a used upvc door which had glass upper half and a upvc panel at the bottom. I have bought new ones of both as they were old and faulty. The door is internal glazed, do I just use the beading to hold the glass and the lower panel in place or use double sided security tape...

    Vertical radiator

I need a tall & slim radiator to fit in a kitchen on a traditional 15 mm ch system. Is there any reason why I can't fit a standard 1500 x 600 double radiator vertically instead of the normal horizontal orientation and pipe the flow and return to the lower two connections? If so how would...

    Chimney smoke from two pots

Presumably the smoke is seeping into the other flu anywhere from about waist height in the upstairs bedroom right up to the stack / pots as that is where the two flues run side by side ? Is the brick gap causing the leak more likely to be in the bedroom chimney breast which of course is...

    Solid floor damp

We're currently renovating a 1900s terraced house with solid floors. Prior to laying the laminate flooring, we have noticed damp at the bottom of the internal and external walls/floor just below the dpc (see pictures) Is there anything we can do?

    Shower alternating hot & cold

I might replace the shower unit just in case as it is quite old. I think this is a generic DHW problem though now. My son spoke to a heating engineer about it and his reply was: "It's probably just the water temp coming into his house has dropped so the boiler can't keep up. If it's a 27kw...

    Shower alternating hot & cold

So I removed the Secondary Heat Exchanger and it didn't look dirty at all, but I cleaned it out and put it back on and the problem is still the same. I've been able to narrow the symptoms down a bit more: The CH circuit is fine. But when drawing just DHW and running the hot tap full on in...

    Main Circuit Flow Switch

Hi, just trying to make sense of the hot water system on my Ariston microGenus 27 MFFI combi. I can see that there is a Main Circuit Flow Switch and there's also a Domestic Hot Water Flow Switch. Does the DHW switch detect the demand for hot water when a tap is opened to the pcb which...

    Shower alternating hot & cold

It hasn't had a service for years, could that clear it ? According to the manual there is a Main Heat Exchanger and a Secondary Heat Exchanger. And ideas which one is more likely to be clogged up ?

    Shower alternating hot & cold

I've recently noticed the shower is alternating hot & cold about every 45 seconds or so. I've never noticed it before so think there may be a problem somewhere. Its fed via 2x 15mm pipes direct from the Combi boiler which was fitted about 8 years ago. To test if it was the boiler causing this...

    First Fix in Kitchen

Yes the plasterboard will be plastered with tiling between worktop and wall units I thought you had to put the cable in capping if it was behind dot n dab plasterboard although I never understood why as it's hardly protective ?
