trouble is cant cut out the wood because of the way its had to be done, may be able to put a sheet of plaster board on top but that would mean putting plasterboard on plaster which shouldnt be a problem, depends how it effects the levels of the wall

i have a bit of timber in a wall where a stud wall has been created over an old door way , is it possible to plaster over timber?

personally i disagree with brist, u cant beat a soild plastered wall, it gives a better feel to the room. ive had it done in a previous house and difference was very obvious, more expensive but i prefered it, saying that there is nothing wrong with a dry lined and plastered wall
