    Screw that Socket

Hi, I have a socket in my kitchen where the front keep coming away from the wall on one side when you pull the plug out. Closeer inspection reveals a problem with the screw hole in the metal back box of the socket, you know the galvanised metal box that sits in the wall (technical...

best solution for long hall with uneven walls?

I would say that the person does not want the job. Our plaster, having done some ceilings, offered to skim the wall I later papered. It is the long wall running from the front door to the top of the stairs, about 30' long and a great height in the stair well. He offered to do it for £100 and...

    kitchen and Bathroom Paint

The walls are a different colour but not the ceilings. No, it is a different time of year but the tin says nothing about letting the paint cure, save leaving it four hours between coats and letting it dry for 7 days before cleaning. Checking the tin again, I may have been a bit misleading...

    kitchen and Bathroom Paint

There are water run marks on all the walls, interor and exterior. The water leaves a stain because it is a hard water area and there is lots of chalk in it. I am shocked by the volume of water that collects across the whole surface of the paint work. This did not happen so dramatically...

best solution for long hall with uneven walls?

If it is an old place I would not worry too much about un-even walls. I would fill and make good as much as possible and then use lining paper. But get a decent 1400 lining paper (I think you can even get 1700 but I have never used it) and hang away. I did this in my hall and landing and the...

    kitchen and Bathroom Paint

Hi, I recently repainted the bathroom with B&Q Matt Kitchen and Bathroom Paint on both walls and cellings. I has previously used and older version of this paint with no problems. Now everytime we have a bath or shower you get a clearly visable film of water over the walls and ceilings...

    Hearth Repair

Hi guys, We had a cast iron combination fire replaced in our house a few months ago. The original had been removed in the 1970s to make way for a back boiler which had sat on a course of bricks laid on the constructional hearth. To fit the new fire place the firm we employed knocked off...

    Repairing Oak

I have a lovely old oak gate leg table. Alas, the screws holding the table top on to the legs no longer hold it tight. No matter how much you tighten the screws the top works loose and rocks around within a few uses. I guess there is no longer a tight enough hole there for the screw to grip...

How do I mend holes in wood?

Alternatively, buy some dowel and a few mm bigger than the hole needing repairing, drill out the hole to the size of the dowel, glue and length of dowel in and cut off flush. Potentially not as accurate as the plug cutter option, but effective it done with care.

    Creaking Moose Moulding

You could try fixing it only to the skirthing board so that the floor moves independantly. If you skirting boards are moving when you walk on the floor you have bigger problems than a creak.

    Showerforce Easiboost Pump

I checked the manual for the pump last night and they state a maximim water tempreture of 65 degrees. The thermostat on the tank was showing about 62/63 so I have turned it down a bit. Only time will tell if this sorts it. I would still be fancinated if someone could tell me why the water...

Ongoing pressure loss - time to dig up the floors?

If you have an old house (i.e pre WW1) that did not originally have concrete floors but which has had them later you may often find damp patches coming through the concrete. Just a thought before digging up a concrete floor, completely knackering any dpm only to find there is no pipe there...

    Showerforce Easiboost Pump

Interesting, the wife was complaining last night that the hot water is hotter than usual - perhaps that accounts for the problem becoming more regular.... ...excuse my ignorance - but why should the HW temperature make any difference to the operating of the pump? If is sheds any light -...

    Showerforce Easiboost Pump

Hi, I have a showerforce easiboost pump which works fine most of the time. THe pump is set at the lowest pressure setting and apart from ebing noisy it produces a nice shower. However, every so often it appears to loose pressure, the pump still sounds like it is operating, althought the...

    Noisy central heating

I intend to but it will be another re-call in already bitter and long running dispute about a variety of problems with this system so I wanted to get some extra info in my armoury before I speak to them.... particularly, should the water be circulating in the raditators when hot water is on...

    Noisy central heating

Hi, I had a new central heating system installed about 10 months ago and it has been nothing but trouble. We had the combi ripped out and a condensing boiler, hot water tank system put in. The main problem now is that every month or so the system becomes very noisy. So much so that when...

    Strange Socket Wiring

I am not an electrician but I am half way through doing up a victorian house whilst living in it. My advice for what it is worth is (if you have the money) just get it all done now in one go. It will be a week or two of hell but in the long run you will thank yourself for taking this...

    Replacing Lock

Really, bloody hell!! So I do not have any house insurance. So let me get this straight - If I put in a 5/7 lever dead lock then any old rim lock will do. However, the deadlock would not be locked when we are at home or asleep as if would hinder getting out the house in a fire - so does...

    Replacing Lock

Cheers Masona, Blimey, expensive aren't they - perhaps I will be tarting up the existing one. I was also considering adding a 5 lever mortice lock for extra secuirty when we are out - would this be generally recommended?

    Replacing Lock

Hi, I wonder if you chaps can give me a little advice. My front door has a cylinder rim lock on it. The cylinder bit is made by HD and the rim lock bit on the inside is made by chubb. It is obviously a mix and match affair and the key we have for the HD cylinder does not fit in the Chubb...
