    Cold loft or warm loft

Am currently clearing out the loft on our 1930's semi, and its a fairly large space, ideal for storage. My original plan was: remove all old loft floor insulation (its black with dust and ripped anyway) replace with new Earthwool or similar (leaving gaps at eaves) board entire loft floor with...

Help save my new ceiling from a leak

We had a water leak earlier today in the kitchen, from above a poor connection under the bath. Long story short pulled kitchen ceiling down to locate so that will need re-doing (it was old and artexed AND woodchip papered anyway, so its an excuse to get rid of it) We recently had the lounge...

Thoughts on composite decking these days?

Just had a spare hour in work so been looking at composite fence panels too, and decking. Think I'm definitely going to go down the composite route, will save so much time (and money) in the long run... Tricky part now is actually designing the garden, and working out what I want where

    Getting fencing replaced by contractors

As above, I'm in Hertfordshire and paid approx £100 per bay, that was including concrete post and gravel board and a std 6ft wooden panel. Ended up working with the guy occasionally and all jobs were quoted about £100 per bay This too included disposal of old panels and posts

Thoughts on composite decking these days?

Cant offer any advice Matt but interested as we too are trying to decide between wood decking and treating it every year, or composite. I power washed and treated the wooden decking we inherited last summer, looked a treat for a month or so, but now its already looking pretty tired and hardly...

    Pergola at bottom of garden

going to start renovating our garden and first of all I'd like to construct a fairly heavy duty looking pergola approx 4.5m wide x 3.5m deep, probably from heavy oak beams (or similar). Could when concreting in the 4 uprights for it, I construct a concrete slab/base covering the whole floor...

It wouldnt be on all night, or every evening, just when we have people round. I was thinking mount it...

Is 10psi too low for a combi boiler?

Thanks all, new boiler fitted and works a treat (still interested in the stopcock question above though) Shower pressure is lower than it was (used to have shower pump under the bath), so guessing the only way of upping the shower pressure is with the booster pump as mentioned at the beginning?

    Freshen up old kitchen units

We inherited an old kitchen (about 15 years old), not marks or damage but a wood effect finish on the doors, we'd like to either paint, or have them sprayed a very light cream colour. Can units be painted easily and to a decent finish? Or is spraying better? We dont want to spend £'000's, we...

Is 10psi too low for a combi boiler?

Thanks Chris, hadnt even thought of that, no idea how old the stopcock is to be fair, it may of been replaced about 17 years ago when the house was extended by previous owners, but they could od re-used the one that was there before the extension i guess? Is there any easy way of telling?

    1930's loft, boarding it out

Hi Stealthwolf, I just thought insulating the loft floor would keep the majority of heat in the main house, and prevent it rising up into the loft?

    1930's loft, boarding it out

Our 1930's semi has a large loft area (floor area) but pretty low height, centre being 5'10" approx. We are gonig ot baord the whole loft floor out for storage, and insulate between the rafters (was going to use Celotex as used it before). Between the rafters you can see the underside of the...

Forgot to say Dan we live in a small village and it seems to be common knowledge that the water pressure is low locally

Is 10psi too low for a combi boiler?

We’re having a WBosch combi boiler fitted to our 1930s semi, and the guy from Eon only measured the mains water pressure at 10 psi from the outside tap. Plumber here today says 10 psi is on the low side and it may need a mains pressure booster pump fitting to up the incoming pressure to the...

Waterfall from overflow pipe - help

Thanks John, we had a power flush 3 years ago when we moved in and the 3 way valve/switch and pump in airing cupboard replaced by BGas, and when the system was drained a few weeks ago to add a radiator the water that was drained out the drain tap (outside the front of house, comes out beside an...

Waterfall from overflow pipe - help

Watched the water tank and got a friend to turn the heating off and the small tank began to fill from a different pipe (NOT the one with the bell valve), but from an upside down ‘U’ shape pipe that also feeds into the small header tank? What’s this pipe please?

Waterfall from overflow pipe - help

THenks guys, I’ll check the valve is closing fully as soon as I’m home from work. It seems to do it either when the heating comes on, or goes off, does this make sense?
