    Retaining wall tying together

Cement will not be fully set tomorrow. Easy enough to rake out a hole, bung a tie in there and cement it back up. A mortar gun helps too! I've only done the blocks so no big deal. I'd rather not though if it's not needed..

    Retaining wall tying together

I have just finished blocking the inner wall, fitted ties every 3 blocks on every other course. I make that every 6 bricks on every sixth course. Think this would be enough? I can fit more retrospectively if needed....

    Retaining wall tying together

Yes of course wall ties, but are there specific ones for non-cavity walls, do I even need to worry about tying them together? Etc...

    Retaining wall tying together

Hello I am building a block-inner, brick outer retaining wall for a new patio. Question is whether there is a good way to tie the walls together without placing bricks across both courses? I would like to avoid any "rotated" bricks if at all possible. Thoughts?

    Poured concrete steps with brick

I like option 1. Seems safer. Didn't take into account settlement. Thanks!

    Poured concrete steps with brick

The patio is not built currently, I am in the process of blocking up the retaining wall. The best illustration I can find is this: http://www.organicoyenforma.com/images/decorativelandscapesinc.com/i/Steps_rounded1.jpg I would imagine each step will be approximately 3000x300, growing shorter...

    Poured concrete steps with brick

Hi Guys I am trying to think of the best (easiest) way to do this. Basically I have a raised patio that I want to build a set of steps up/in to. the steps themselves will be almost a semi-circle. I want to use brick for the risers and then slabs on top. Question is, do I make forms and pour...

Garage roof rafters treated or not

In fact, I just priced it up and there is £15 difference in the whole roof between treated and untreated. It doesn't really bear thinking about for that price difference!

Garage roof rafters treated or not

I was thinking better safe than sorry. Woodworm, any condensation, etc... Its not too much more expensive for tanalized. If the general consensus on here is just go standard then I will. Thanks

Garage roof rafters treated or not

I am about to purchase the timber for the roof trusses/rafters on a new build garage. I will be putting a metal roof with dripstop on. Is there a need to buy tanalized do you think? Or will standard rough sawn be OK? Thanks, Mark.

    Eaves overhang

The pitch I was thinking will be either 12/6 or 12/7. Not decided yet. I don't want a really shallow pitch as I'd like to have a little storage in the roof space. I think the plan is to have an overhang of 25cm and then fit some nice wooden shiplap soffits - give it a log cabin feel :) I will...

    Eaves overhang

Well basically I have not even finished blocking to the required height yet so all options are open. I am going to be using 2x4 for the trusses, the span from wall to wall will be 4m, there will be no vents needed as far as I can see. Single block construction. What's a good ballpark figure...

    Eaves overhang

What does it depend on? I thought it would be a standard size? Thanks, Mark.

    Eaves overhang

Gents What's the perfect overhang rafter overhang at the eaves for a metal sheet roof? I am thinking somewhere in the region of 25-30cm? What do you think? Thanks, Mark.

    Gable Ends

I'm toying with he idea of gable ladders. I would like an overhang if its not going to be an absolute pain. You build the ladders first and then block and pack with cement around them right?

    Gable Ends

Hi Guys Building a single skin garage and want to know the best way to handle the gable ends. Should I build up the gable before or after fitting the roof trusses. I kind of get the feeling that it would be easier to finish the block-work after the roof trusses (and possibly the roof sheets)...

    Metal Sheet Roofing

Hi Guys I shall be starting to roof the new garage soon. I've decided to go with metal sheeting, the box profile rather than standard corrugated. I have a question on how to fit the barge board. Should I leave an overhang like the eaves or does it fit snugly up to the block wall? Also, can you...

Concrete mix for floor - additived

Hi Guys Quick question on the best mix for a waterproof, bonded, anti-dusting mix. I am guessing a 1:6 mix for the concrete is sufficient for 10cm depth, my question is on what additives I need to put in there? Thanks, Mark.

    Damp proof membrane

Hi Guys I am erecting a small ish shed/workshop/garage and I was wondering about the damp proof membrane and whether it would be OK to lay it and concrete over chippings. I have flattened them really well using a punner and I would like to avoid having to raise the level any further with sand...
