    Pulling down a supporting wall

robmorphet - I don't really understand :?: - When you say in the mortar joints do you mean that it goes right through the wall or is it two seperate props on each side that catch the edge of a whole row of bricks?

    Pulling down a supporting wall

Thanks for the replies. Very Just wanted to put my topic back to the top. I'm gradually psyching myself up for doing it. Someone else must have a view whether its good or bad. :!:

    Pipe to Gas Fire

Cobweb - Although B & Q sell a microbore kit to install a gas fire. I am pretty sure that it is illegal to do it yourself unless of course you are a corgi registered gas fitter. Most gas fires are now fitted using microbore so you shouldn't have a problem.

    Pulling down a supporting wall

Hello all I've just received my building wanrrent for pulling down a supporting wall. I got a quote for £2960 for the job which the builder put down to the complicated steel work. Basically there is a steel frame around the doorway which is bolted onto an RSJ to support the floor above. I...

    Skimming

I've plastered a few walls over floating coats which I have been chuffed with, but I have never skimmed a wall over existing plaster. I imagine that this is a relatively simple job but does anyone know if you need to coat the wall with anything and what type of plaster to use? I was going to...

Fall on a toilet waste pipe?

Does anyone know if there is a minimum fall on a toilet waste? I'm planning to install an en suite which is about 3 meters away from the nearest outside wall. I'm planning on taking a branch off the existing waste pipe which is in line with where the new one is planned. Another quick...

    Installing a fireplace

I've just bought a nice new marble fireplace. I want to install it myself but I have no gas in the flat yet. Does anyone know if it is possible to leave a pipe (probably a bit of 22mm copper) laid in the constructional hearth for the gas fitter to insert into? What is the usual proceedure...

Bathroom, electrics problem, builders and combi boilers !!

Just a few questions on this subject. When rewiring light switches, etc, can new wire usually be fed into the existiong conduit or do the walls need to be tracked? Should the fuse box always be replaced? Mine is a pretty old one, but as far as I can see there is very little that can go...

    Ducting for multiple extractor fans

Hi all. Does anyone know if it is possible to run three fans into one duct. As well as saving money on the ducting I thought that this would mean I only need one unsightly outlet. Ideas appreciated.

    Combi Boiler/ Shower

Breezer - I appreciate your concern. But as I work for Transco I'm aware of the safety implications of connecting the gas supply. I'd loose my job if I fitted it myself and someone found out. I will definitely be getting a CORGI registered fitter in. No advice on whether Vokera or Potterton...

    Combi Boiler/ Shower

Thanks Ant. The flow rate for both boilers are the same 13.5l/min. Do you (or anyone else) know whether this will work well with the shower tower? It does have the jets you mentioned. Any other views on these two boilers would be appreciated.

    Combi Boiler/ Shower

I am planning on installing a central heating myself. I'm probably going to buy a full system from Mr Central heating (.com). I'm going to stick to the usual 22/15mm copper system as I have some experience of working with copper. I was wondering whether anyone could reccomend a potterton 28...

    Dodgy or not?

Right - straight to the point. I'm rewiring my flat. I've done some wiring before. I was thinking of only rewiring the ring circuits and leaving the lighting circuits that are currently in. Surely the lighting circuits are less dangerous as they carry such small currents. The current wiring...

Installing a living flame Gas Fire

When I spoke to B&Q they quoted way over that amount (around £1200) because I had to do some basic structural work to increase the size of the opening. It is a very attractive fireplace though so I feel that it is worth the effort. If I make the opening good I reakon I'll get someone to fit it...

Installing a living flame Gas Fire

Hi all I'm looking for some advice on installing a living flame gas fire (B&Q panoramic fireplace). I am intending to carry out all the building work and then get a CORGI registered worker in to connect it up. It is an inset fireplace so it sits right in below the chimney. I pulled out the...

    Uplighters in the floor

Hello everyone. This is my first post. I am interested in installing uplighters in the floor that I saw in an impressive programme last night (Grand Designs). Did anyone else see It? I was just wondering if anyone knew where I could find these and how much they will cost. I assume that they...
