    Floppy Door handle

No sooner had I posted about my draughty backdoor than my front door handle broke! I've got a UPVC door and the handle has gone floppy - it is very difficult to get the door to shut as the lowest horizontal pin doesn't seem to be returning properly. Having watched some videos I was convinced I...

Big gap at top of patio doors - adjustable?

    Thanks all that's really helpful!

Big gap at top of patio doors - adjustable?

Thanks All, This seems to make sense - however I've looked at several videos and they all seem to be about installing new glass - looking at the glass it looks like it's 'in right' so I don't really understand what the aim of reinstalling the glass is. (I'm not questioning this advice - just...

Big gap at top of patio doors - adjustable?

Thanks for your reply. I will post some hinge pictures shortly but it's exactly as you say - big gap in the middle but no gap closer to the hinges. It occasionally catches when we shut it but it only does it for a couple of days before working freely again. Assuming bracing the glass is a big...

Big gap at top of patio doors - adjustable?

It's not easy to see in the pic but there's a huge gap at the top of this door (if I look at it from the right angle I can see a lot of daylight and there's a big draft) and I'm wondering if there's anything I can do about it in terms of adjustments? I've seen posts where the UPVC frame has...

Very old roof tiles (biscuits) - mend with felt from inside?

Absolutely right - there was a roofer who kept texting me saying he would be here 'next week', for about 4 months and never came. Feel like you can't really harass someone too much when it's a £60 job. Nearly persuaded to buy my own roofing ladder and try it myself but could see that going...

Very old roof tiles (biscuits) - mend with felt from inside?

I've got a 70 year old roof with old torching on. It's in remarkably good condition despite being one of the few remaining original roofs on our estate. The problem seems to be when someone gets on the roof e.g. ariel installation, the tiles are brittle and soon after something cracks and...

    Have I broken my roof?

Excellent point - of course that makes sense, it's probably not a huge amount of water in total but that would have been seeping down my inside wall I guess! How can levels be sorted when it's going on concrete? Would it need an additional structure on top? Or leveled out with additional concrete?

    Have I broken my roof?

I've been painting on several coats of black jack bitumen paint on my flat roof - it's great stuff and (touch wood) seems to have stopped the leak - a BIG BUT though. The water pooling on my roof is now insane, I'm sure it's much worse than it was - there is an inch of standing water in places...

Am I allowed to brick up an outside door?

LOL - my next post was going to be advice about changing locks

Am I allowed to brick up an outside door?

Background: all the houses on our 1950's estate have had an added-on half-brick outhouse (long before we moved here 3 years ago). This outhouse was put on over the back door which is in our kitchen, but the outhouse itself only has a flimsy wooden door on it. As our back door isn't great (wooden...

Blackjack All Weather Roof Coating - residue around lying water

I've been covering my flat roof with this - which says that it is dry within 24 hours but unaffected by water immediately after application. I applied 2 coats to my roof and it had a good 48 hrs to dry before the rain - however where the water has pooled on the roof there's a white residue all...

Could anyone tell me what l what pipe I need...

Thanks so much. Toolstation is across the road so should have the job done in about 20 mins. Appreciated!

Could anyone tell me what l what pipe I need...

The below image shows a drain and the white pipe is where the dishwasher and washing machine drain. The pipe is too close to the wall and the brickwork gets splashed. I'm looking for a short length of pipe to redirect away from the wall but there's a huge choice. Does anyone know what I need...

Is an extension to a listed building itself a listed building?

Thanks Woody. That's interesting - the requirement for the conservatory waa in relation to it's footprint.

Is an extension to a listed building itself a listed building?

Cheers both. Yes we will go to council. It's not the conservatory - just repairs to a leaking roof. A neighbour for a similar building apparently needed permission to replace window frames with identical window frames...

Is an extension to a listed building itself a listed building?

A family member has a conservatory which is getting on a bit now and the roof has been leaking. It was a bad design and required planning permission to put up due to the house being a listed building. I'm assuming that any non-identical repairs to the roof must be approved by a local planning...

Adding Onduline to felted shed Roof (ed.)

A while ago but did you sort this? I have similar and suspected it was leaking through where the felt tacks were. I've coated with bitumen paint but primed first in the hope that the bitumen would cover the tacks.

Replacing cement fillet with lead flashing on flat roof - process

Another roof post from me... Background (OPTIONAL READING ;)): I had resigned myself to having a new flat roof installed but thought I'd give patching up a final go with a tin of bitumen trowel mastic. It seems to have worked well and the majority of the roof looks to be in reasonable...

    Reasons for blocking up airbricks

This is purely out of interest but on my estate each house has 4 air bricks at the bottom of the gable end. Without fail every house has had 2-3 of these cemented up. I'm assuming at some point these were deemed unnecessary - or they let a lot of heat out. Just curious - anyone know?
