I would cement a brick back in - then Eas-fil after as LJW61 says.. I prefer to do "like for like" just in case there's an expansion issue and the timber shrinks or expands causing some cracking ? But each to there own. Stoyer

Hi All, I am removing all the old orange varnish from my 70's stairs. It looks like pirana pine. The treads and strings are vanished. The bannisters were the same but they are now in the skip  I would just like to know - what grade of paper I should use before applying wood dye ...

    Leyland Undercoat

Ok - I'll stir in a bit of W/S and see how we go. I certainly agree with the warming trick - but it must go instantly cold as it hits the surface though. Thanks all, Stoyer

    How to repair this

A pva/water mix !!?? Would watering down normal emulsion (mist coat) not do the job ? Surely the pva route would stop the emulsion soaking into the plaster and allow it to peel away again ? Guys ? Stoyer

    Painting Stairs

Thanks for the advice guys, I am not a fan of decorators caulk, I have never had a long lasting job with the stuff. Like you say Mazdaq, looks good at first, but eventually it cracks or shinks and leaves a messy job. Maybe if used thinly and left to dry fully it is ok, but I won't use it...
