Damp patches, bubbling paint after damp works....

Property: brick mid terrace, cement rendered.. I injected the exterior wall of this mid terrace property with Dry Zone over 2 years ago. Internal plaster was hacked off, treated with salt solution and then Thistle Dry-Coat(cement based) was used, then a finish coat of multi finish. The...

    Radiator install & solid floor

I edited my OP, I put the image alongside the wrong sentence. Haven't decided whether to go with copper or plastic yet. Previously I've done long runs in plastic, then a push fit elbow and copper under each rad.. Those guide and seal things look decent but it seems all geared up for 10mm...

    Radiator install & solid floor

I've only ever installed rads before with suspended floors, pipes up from below. House I've just bought has a solid ground floor so ground floor pipes must come from above. Just wondered what people thought was the best/easiest way of having the pipes exit the wall into the valves? Do...

    Moving meter

I'm doing a renovation, the meter and consumer unit are smack bang underneath the living room window. Gotta be the most ridiculous location I've ever seen. The feed from the outside comes straight up through the solid flood into the meter. I know i could get the supply company to move...

Old house with york flag stone floor

I have an old house with a slightly uneven yorkshire flag stone floor on the ground floor. I assume directly laid onto earth. What's the best way/most cost effective way of preparing the floor for carpet? Or the best solution to simply take up the flags, flog em and get a new concrete...

    Joiners 'repair' of door threshold

really? how is it 'fair' for any money? It needs re-doing therefore even if it was free, it's useless. I don't know the price yet, but he wasn't asked to do a bodge job.

    Joiners 'repair' of door threshold

In one of rentals, the door threshold and bottom of the frame had rotted. Agent got a joiner to replace it... This is what he did:    When I first saw, I thought the tenant had done a temporary repair himself. But no, someone expects me to pay them for...

    Temporary fencing

I need to erect some temporary fencing around my site. I don't have a builder involved yet but the site is dangerous. Gonna need the fencing up for 6 months probably. With that in mind, I assume it's pointless hiring? and I should just buy the panels and sell them on when I've finished...

    Damp with sitting tenant...

In her defense, I'm pretty confident it's not a condensation issue. We've had those before(next door) and this is definitely damp. Not a single sign of surface mould anywhere and or wet walls. A lot of the issues in these houses are down to salt coming out of the bricks.

    Damp with sitting tenant...

Went round to a tenants today and obvious signs of damp.... She doesn't want the upset of having all the plaster hacked off so what are the alternatives other than a bodge job with damp seal? She wants to re-decorate as well.

    Keyless night lock...?

Had a recent attempted break in and for extra security I want to add a couple more locks on the back door (hardwood)... However, I don't want a yale with a key as I know for sure I'd lock myself out. Just want something that we can slide/lock at night while we're in bed. Looked at these...

    Staining exterior hardwood door

I have to replace our hardwood back door due to damage from attempted break-in. Fitting not problem and have some Sadolin stain for the job. The blurb on the tin recommends I use "sadinal classic wood treatment" prior to using the stain(ie, first coat). Is this a necessary step, or merely...

    Outbuilding planning question

There's an outbuilding in our garden which was previous used in years gone by as a toilet and outhouse. We've demolished the top and simply the footings remain. What are the planning laws regarding re-development of an outbuilding should I wish to re-build it as an office? Do I need planning...

Central Heating Flushing/Cleaning in summer time

I'll look into magnaclean. I've just fitted a lever valve in the cellar at the lowest point to use as a drain off point. My problem really is just the time of year. If it were winter I could use a number of products and let it circulate but as it's summer I'm not sure. I have searched the...

Alpha CB28, Do I need CH pressure to get hot water?

I'm doing 'maintenance' on my central heating. I've discovered a couple of dodgy hep2o grab rings and can't get them until tomorrow. So obviously the CH pressure is zero and the boiler is flashing alternate green/red to tell me such. The problem is whenever the CH loses pressure, we can't...

Central Heating Flushing/Cleaning in summer time

The plumber who installed central heating(few years ago) in our house did so without using Hep2o inserts or barrier so today is the day I have to drain the system and put inserts where they aren't... I also need to replace the drain valve as the valve has broken. I've been under the floor...

    Fitting carpet grippers on stairs

Usually when I fit carpet grippers I leave around 8mm between the strip and the skirting. When fitting them on stairs what gap should be left between strip and tread and strip and riser?

    Spinning bath tap, backnut

I fitted new taps to our bath. It was a bit tricky as the holes on the bath were square and thus the taps only just covered the hole corners. I used metal tophat washers and then the tap backnut underneath... One of the taps is spinning slightly, the backnut and tophat washer remain...
