    Wood worktop cupping

Hi, I have installed my first ever wood worktop. It seemed to go ok and I made sure I used over sized holes and washers at the front where the worktop is solid and slotted brackets at the back (slot perpendicular to grain). I oiled several times ( all sides) before installation and the top...

    1930s door renovation

Looking at the door more it appears I will need to replace the entire top panel as the molding is cut into it, not added on as I first thought....

    1930s door renovation

As a bit of project I have decided to restore a 1930s door that I have. The stained glass is in good condition but at some point the trim around the window was removed on the inside and replaced (badly) with putty. The top of the window is a curved trim (s trim?). How were these originally made...

    Kitchen worktop

Brilliant, thanks. So just oil both ends well, join them up then keep oiling the join until no more is absorbed? Thanks!

    Kitchen worktop

I am about to install a 40mm thick wooden worktop (600mm wide) in the kitchen I have just fitted. It's the first time I have done it and it's all new to me so I have a couple of questions. I have an unsupported span of 120cm over two freestanding units. Will the worktop be okay over this or do...

    Finished tile height

In the end I waited and had the tiling done first. The legs of my corner larder were fixed at 150mm so I didn't want any nasty surprises. I can never afford to do the tiling or kitchen again anyway, so shouldn't matter!

    Finished tile height

It's not the costs, just the timings for trades etc. But if it is that much better doing the whole thing then I will just wait. Thanks!

    Finished tile height

Hi, I will need to fit my kitchen before my floor is finished. The floor is new and has been Flo screed so is flat. I have 8.5mm tiles to put down. Can anyone give me some advice as to the rough finished tile height so I can adjust my units accordingly. Thanks!

    Securing post to concrete

I have an aluminium post with 4 mounting holes that I need to attach to a concrete drive. Would I be better off using wedge anchor bolts or a self tapping anchor if I wanted the maximum strength connection? Thanks for any help!

Fixing concrete fence post to concrete slab

Hi, Is there a way to fix a concrete fence post onto a concrete slab? I need to renew a fence on my boundary, and the line sits above a foundation slab. I would rather use 6' concrete posts to match the rest of the fence, but won't have enough depth to bury them 2' unde ground. My fall back...

Replacing wood under slates of Victorian house.

if you are getting it redone you probably don't need this wood; just membrane, batten and slate. The wood just predates battens and membrane and shouldn't contribute to the structural integrity of roof (again, no expert!). In fact, not having should help the new roof breathe more.

Replacing wood under slates of Victorian house.

I am no tradesman, so may be completely wrong, but to replace that the slates will need to be stripped as the slates will be nailed into the wood. Once you have gone to the effort of scaffolding etc it might be more worthwhile to strip the roof and apply felt and batterns (this bits of wood...

Recessed gas meter box in solid walls

Hi, I am trying to figure out where I can move my gas meter to (as in have it moved to, not touch it myself!) and was wondering whether recessed boxes are allowed to be installed in solid walls as well as cavity walls or whether there are some regs that disallow this? Thanks!

1st floor window in side of house

Hi, I am looking to put a window into my house on the first floor, facing sideways. I understand that it needs to be obscured and non-opening, unless 170cm off the floor. Does this mean I can have a window with the top part opening if the opening bit is 170cm off the floor, or does the whole...

Best way to break up large lumps of concrete

You might find just wacking them hard with a sledge hammer or lump hammer will cause them to break into manageable lumps.

    Fireplace lintel?

I removed the in fill fireplace and actually found the metal support that would have supported the arch whilst setting still in place. All looks much nicer now it's back to its original dimensions Thanks for the help, wouldn't have had the confidence to do it without it!
