    Removing Limestone Fireplace

Nige F you were absolutely right, there were two fittings embedded in the plaster holding the top section in. Once I had used a multi tool and a long knife to separate the bond between the fireplace and the wall, which took some time, it all lifted away in two pieces quite easily. It was...

    Removing Limestone Fireplace

I am looking to remove this fireplace that was in when I bought the house. The problem is I wanted to remove it and re-use it in another house. It is pretty solid and has no movement in it at all, I have tried to cut round the top piece of the seal to see if that would help and it doesn't...

Suspended Wooden Floor Insulation - Mineral Wool or SuperQuilt?

Ok thanks. I will have a look online and see what I can get. Going to aim for at least 100mm, got to be better than letting the cold air in without restriction as it is now.

Suspended Wooden Floor Insulation - Mineral Wool or SuperQuilt?

So if I went with board, does it need to be 100mm and above to get any real benefit? Then simply cut the board to size maybe leaving a few mm extra so it fits tight, hold it up with some galvanized nails and then foam and tape as required? Do you push the board up tight to the floorboards or...

Suspended Wooden Floor Insulation - Mineral Wool or SuperQuilt?

If I cut it in 120cm lengths and it flex'd a little then maybe, but it seems quite a bit more expensive so it would need to be much better than the other options. I have since read that SuperQuilt and other foil options are over rated and not as good as some of the accreditation's suggest?

Suspended Wooden Floor Insulation - Mineral Wool or SuperQuilt?

I would have to lift the floorboards to use this due to the opening and depth for getting in the crawl space.

Suspended Wooden Floor Insulation - Mineral Wool or SuperQuilt?

I am looking to insulate my front room via the crawl space under the suspended wooden floor. I am torn between using standard loft insulation, or SuperQuilt. I see the SuperQuilt as being the easier install, but I am not sure on which would provide the best insulation. As the width between the...

    Loft / Roof Window

Thanks for the reply, not sure on the make but it is a tilt and turn. The air vents are obviously part of it but cannot be shut off. There is a draft however that comes from the bottom of the frame and from around the sides of the window itself. It does look old and a bit of a DIY job to be...

    Loft / Roof Window

I already have an existing loft window but it was installed before I bought the house and seems very old and the wind comes through it quite easily. If I am wanting to update the window so it is air tight and provides more insulation, is this easy enough as a DIY job or would it need me getting...

    Painting External Tiles

The drive is tarmac and my garden does have a rose bush and some other plants etc just not shown on the picture as it was more about the tiles. So anyway, you have no idea what type of paint to use

    Painting External Tiles

Why do you say that, as it will become a regular upkeep? I think the second pic looks a lot better and I have not seen them having to paint every year so they must have done it right first time, im just not sure what that is.

    Painting External Tiles

Can anyone tell me the best paint to use in order to paint exterior tiles that are above my bay window? I am guessing it will either be exterior tile paint which comes in a lack of colors, or masonry paint. A few people on my street have done this already, some look great and others have faded...

    Chimney Leaking

All the photos are from the same chimney. One face of the chimney is in my kitchen, with the other face in the outhouse. There doesn't appear to be any air breaks or damp proof membrane, house was built in 1937.

I actually have two chimney stack in my house, one in the living room and the other in the kitchen. It is the one in the kitchen and outhouse that is leaking. The pictures show how the brick has eroded in the outhouse due to the damp I presume, and the paint is also bubbling in the kitchen on...

    De-commissioning Gas Fire

Hi, I have a gas fire in the kitchen that needs to be cut off and taken out. Stupid question but does this need to be done by a gas engineer that is Corgi registered and if so, how much should I be looking to pay roughly. There is nothing complicated about it, simply turn off the gas, cut the...

    Porch - Paint Blistering

Can anyone help me out with some general advice? I have a upvc external door and then an internal door, in between the two doors is a small porch area that has been painted by the previous owner. The paint has started to blister and I am wondering why? Is this simply due to the moisture from...
