    Reveal above back door

Many thanks for all the useful info. The soldiers are just sitting on the frame which is softwood and fortunately sound at the top although slowly rotting at the bottom. They are also loose - and it's very helpful to know this before taking the door frame out! Looks to me as if the best...

    Why do plasterboard nails 'pop'

I believe it's due to poor adhesion and I'm sure I read on another post (don't ask me where!) that screws are better in this respect because they have smaller heads and the crosspoint recess provides a better key for the plaster. But I expect a proper plasterer will have the definite answer.

    Reveal above back door

Thanks for that, probably wouldn't have thought of the insulation. I just wondered if anyone could tell me how it should have been done. Would you normally have the lintel lower and just plaster onto that? If so, how is it hidden on the outside? It's part of a basically sound 80's...

    Reparing dog scratches

Have you tried wood filler? - the two part stuff with a catalyst in a tube. Made by Ronseal etc. That usually sticks quite well. You might need to make the scratches a bit deeper to improve adhesion if it doesn't work first time.

    Fridge freezer sizes

Maybe losing a bit of depth doesn't matter that much, because we are forever losing things at the back of the fridge but even the freestanding ones are smaller. This is why I thought about the insulation issue because when we bought the Mistral there was a Bosch model which was more efficient...

    Fridge freezer sizes

I am planning to replace my Hotpoint Mistral FF (10 years old - ish) with a modern integrated type. My Mistral capacity (according to the plate) is 205/132 litres but all the integrated ones have advertised capacities quite a bit smaller. Fair enough, I thought, maybe you lose capacity...

    Halogen Outside Lights

BlueFunnell, Please do not be offended by some of the posters on this forum. They mean well but some never graduated from Charm School. Maybe the heat is getting to some people too. It is worthwhile persevering with this forum and developing a thicker skin because many of these guys are...

    No More Nails Nightmare

I've had some success in this type of situation by heating the adhesive gently with a blowlamp which softened it sufficiently to scrape it off. You do have to be careful because it catches fire quite easily and burns with lots of 'orrible fumes.

How many lights in a kitchen?

Maybe not then :( , but what alternatives are there to spread the light about? Pendants don't seem very practical in a kitchen, but there are obvious advantages (wiring-wise) in just replacing the three units I have with something providing more light.

How many lights in a kitchen?

I'm thinking recessed spots at the moment and probably lots of small ones to avoid "puddles of light" but open to suggestions. But we definitely need something better than the underfed glow-worms we have at the moment!

How many lights in a kitchen?

Has anybody any ideas how much lighting is needed in a largeish kitchen - about 15' square. All I know is that we have 3 x D-type fluorescents (16W each) and it's not enough - is there a rule of thumb per square foot or metre? I am tending towards low voltage halogen lights but again can...

    Reveal above back door

I have just removed the reveal above my back door which was made of two pieces of plywood and looked awful because it didn't match the adjoining plasterwork. Here is a picture of what remains:- As you will see, there is a steel lintel above the ceiling and vertical bricks below it in...

    REMOVAL OF MOSS

Maybe you should be treating the cause not the effect. Moss is usually caused by poor drainage or lack of light. You need to change something so that conditions favour grass over moss. Plenty on gardening sites and books but I seem to remember that top dressing to improve soil structure...

Many thanks - just what I needed to know

    Offset Sockets

I just wondered whether you can still buy sockets like this:- They seem to me to be safer than the sort with both switches in the middle - the ham-fisted cannot switch on the wrong one and more elegant than the sort with both switches on the outside. Does anybody know of a stockist or...

    wiring question

"You can allus tell a Yorkshireman, but you can't tell him much." And before you come down on me like a ton of bricks, I'm from the Broad Acres myself. There is a lot of good advice on this forum from the pros and a lot of common sense talked by well meaning amateurs. Surely the...

    plastering cable directly

You might want to think about whether you might ever want to remake a connection or extend the cable run - if you put the cable direct in plaster you cannot pull through a bit of slack if you need it or pull through a longer cable.

    Supply to Programmer

Thanks Breezer, now I even know what it's called :) Having taken on a house where the previous owner has run cables at random angles and had a few near misses, I am now probably a bit too obsessive about keeping wiring in places where you expect it. But I'll take your advice and mount the...
