New tap makes water taste funny - should this happen ?

Hi, is it usual for a new tap to make the water taste funny. We have just had the tap fitted in our kitchen. It is a heavy brushed steel mixer with a longish arm and quarter turn taps (Lamona Hi-Tech Monobloc from Howdens). When you turn on the cold water, the water has a horrible metalic taste...

How to prepare bathroom floor to take tiles

Hi, I hope this is not a stupid question. I am thinking of tiling our bathroom floor and went to a large tile shop for advice. They said that building regulations states that the floorboards must be covered with 15mm ply wood and then the tiles placed on top. However, they supply a special...

Can wet system piping be run through old warm air ducts

Hi, We are about to change warm air to a wet system. We have had a couple of independent engineers in to cost the job and they have both said they need to run surface pipes downstairs due to concrete floors. One has also said that he will use plastic pipes upstairs and this is quite common now...

What is the best way to install bathroom extractor fan

Many thanks for the info - I am trying to decide whether to go in the loft or straight through the wall. One company yesterday told me they can no longer use ladders due to Health & Safety and that I will have to pay for scaffolding so I need to find out what will be involved. I am thinking it...

What is the best way to install bathroom extractor fan

Many thanks for the info. I need to look up the regulations. I think this means that I have to pay a profressional electrician to do the work who can then certify the work. If I do the work myself I am guessing I have to pay a fee to the council which probably makes it uneconomical. Thanks again.

What is the best way to install bathroom extractor fan

Hi, Have fitted a shower over our bath and was hoping that the window would be ok for ventilation. Unfortunately the walls are getting wet with condensation and I think we need further ventilation. I have been looking at extractor fans and would really appreciate some advice on this. (1) Do...

What is the best way to prepare floorboards for vinyl?

Hi, Decided to replace the carpet in our bathroom for vinyl and would appreciate some advice on the correct way to prepare the floor. Am I allowed to install timer for heating

Thank you very much indeed. The only reason I wanted to do this myself was because the two people I had round (one a heating engineer and the other an electrician) seemed to have some very strange ideas on how this should be done. However, maybe I need to search for somebody else. Thanks again...

Are laminate boards ok in the bathroom.

Thank you for the info. Yes, we were wondering about tiles and vinyl. I guess with vinyl we would need to lay boards first (we have floorboards). I think tiles look the best but not sure if we can lay these straight on the floor boards - I thnk we need to visit the flooring shop to sort out...

Are laminate boards ok in the bathroom.

Hi, could I just ask for some advice regarding laminate flooring. We currently have carpet in our bathroom and are considering changing this to laminate boards or tiles. We currently have floorboards and are thinking it would be easier just to lay laminate boards with tile effect or something. I...

Am I allowed to install timer for heating

Hi, Would really appreciate some advice. We have a Johnson & Starley (J&S) boiler with a single timer for the water / heating. The timer controls the water in the morning which comes on early before we need the heating, so we have no way of automatically switching on the heating. J&S technical...

Thank you for the info - is this something that has to be done legally now or can it just be left the way it is - obvisouly I want to be safe but I am thinking that we will have to wreck half the house to get back to the consumer unit in the garage. Thank you.

Am I allowed to replace my bathroom - rules and regulations?

Just looking to replace our bathroom suite which I think was installed when the house was built in the 70's. I would like to fit this myself but am not sure about the latest rules and regulations - I understand pipes have to be earthed, etc. - am I allowed to do this? I am not looking to change...

Really appreciate help with these central heating quotes

Hi, (1) I do not have the figures for the pressure but the heating engineer did measure this and said that pressure and flow are fine for a combi. (2) There are four people in the house - two teenage girls hammering the shower every day - this is another area that i am considering - we...

Really appreciate help with these central heating quotes

Looking to replace warm air heating in our 70's 4 bed detached house. Water feeds to one bathroom, cloakroom, kitchen and utility room. Johnson & Starley say they can supply parts for our boiler for another 10 years but we are renovating the house and think we should bring the heating 'up to...

Estimate of cost for combi boiler and 11 radiators

I think this illustrates nicely our dilemma!!!!! The bl**dy installers cannot even agree on how to secure a pipe to the wall. Had another installer in today who came highly recommended (although I have now discovered that he changed the boiler and did not do a full install). Apparently...

Estimate of cost for combi boiler and 11 radiators

Thanks for all the info - just arranged for a very highly recommended independent installer to come in today so hopefully make a decision on who to go with over the weekend. Could I just ask one more question - what is the expected life of a combi boiler and would a normal (just the basic...
