Is this soakaway next to the house a potential problem?

You mean, how wet or soft is the ground in this area?

Is this soakaway next to the house a potential problem?

Rain water from one side of my roof is detected in to this concrete ring next to the house. It never fills up. The water is level with the ground, and the bottom of this ring is perhaps 50-70cm under ground level. I assume the water is soaking down in to the earth? If so, is it potentially a...

Replacing internal metal door frame with wood + lintel

Some of the door frames in our new property are metal. We would like to replace with wooden frames. Am I correct to assume that there is likely no lintel above the frame, and that the metal frame actually acts as a lintel itself? I assume for a builder this is a fairly small job, however I...

    Insulating a sloped bathroom ceiling

Thanks, I'll also check that out. An extraction fan is in the plan. There is also a velux window that should help with moisture if we open it after using the bathroom. I'll measure the space between the tiles and rafter, and also the depth of the rafter to see if fiberglass fits. Insulated...

    Insulating a sloped bathroom ceiling

We are renovating our bathroom and need to insulate the ceiling. As you can see from the pictures the bathroom is in the sloped part of the ceiling. We have gutted the bathroom and removed the ceiling. There is/was glass mineral wool insulation with foil. Can we replace this with the same...

Is there a name for this type of shower/bath configuration?

We are currently thinking about our new bathroom installation and would like to avoid having a gap between the bathtub and shower cubicle. Our wish is something like below, where we install the 180cm bathtub, and then use the rest of the available space in the corner (around 118cm) for the...

How to fill a 60cm trench that was dug for an electric cable

Perhaps it's called 5 core? I think it has 5 wires inside and will power a separate fuse box in the garage.

How to fill a 60cm trench that was dug for an electric cable

I've dug a trench for a 5 phase electricity cable from the house to the garage. I haven't yet asked the electrician now I should fill the trench, but I'd like to get some suggestions here first...

How to fill a 60cm trench that was dug for an electric cable

I just finished digging 60cm trench for an electric cable. I will re-fill it with the earth that I removed. Is there a special method I should use to ensure the earth is the same density as it was before digging it up? I don't want to have a big mound because all the earth doesn't fit. I also...

Has this wood been treated for woodworm or rot with some chemicals?

So far I've only found one piece that was really brittle and damaged. The other parts look and sound solid despite the evidence of woodworm. This area will remain in use as a barn, so how it looks isn't of much concern to us really. But I'll be sure to find all damaged areas.

Is that also something to consider if we want to sand the wood?

    Implications of removing winter garden

We have a winter garden that we would like to remove. The floor is a patio that is not graded away from the building, not towards. It slopes a little to the middle. As the roof covers it from rain this wasn't previously a concern, but without the roof there is potential for standing water...

What type of wood is this, and what could I use it for?

Yeah that's it. Thanks. It was all over the rooms upstairs. Looked like a sauna. I don't want it in the house so I'm not sure where I would use it for cladding. There's loads of it in the barn also which I'm planning on removing this weekend. Good to know. I'll gift some to father in law also.

Can floor boards or old doors be wood chipped and used for a garden path?

I have lots of old floorboards and doors that I don't need and would like to find a use for them. I'm considering chipping them for garden paths or raised garden beds. Mr concern is this may be unsuitable if they have been treated with chemicals.

What type of wood is this, and what could I use it for?

I recently purchased a house and this wood was on some of the walls and ceilings. My father in law suggested we could burn it in our oven. What type of wood is it, and what is it suitable for? Could it be put through a wood chipper and used as wood chips for a garden path? Could it be used to...
