running a heavy load on a fused spur

Thanks for the advice. The spur is already in place, but is single socket with no fuse. My 'work' would be to install the FCU and a double socket. So the option of extending the ring from the ground floor involves removing floorboards/walls etc. and is not practicable. My consumer...

running a heavy load on a fused spur

Hi, I am installing a washing machine and dryer with an occasional iron in the basement and need to install the sockets for these. I want to run a 3metre spur from the existing socket ring system on the ground floor. The appliances all used to be plugged into this ring system but now will run...

    correcting a bad plaster job

thanks kjacko, the eejit has done a proverbial runner. Well, he says the job is fine and he is not coming back. So that the end of it really. I can get hold of a feather edge and slap some One coat on as described. Never used one coat though. Once the plaster is in place and is...

    correcting a bad plaster job

Hi, Just just had a large bay window bricked up, bond coat applied and then a skim across the entire wall including the window. I am installing kitchen units across the entire wall. The job looks fine but on closer inspection is no good. The part of the new wall where the 1.2m wide window...

how soon can you plaster new brickwork after being laid?

Hi, I am bricking up a window with breezeblocks and a plasterer is coming to bond and then skim the new brickwork. How soon after the blocks are laid can this work be done? I am intending to do the plaster work the day after the bricks are laid. Is this too soon? thanks

Creating a totally invsible access panel in floor tiles

If I use grout, then the tile hatch will be invisible and removing grout and replacing it is quite quick if you have the right tools. Silicone is much more of a pain to remove entirely and I will notice the colour differential which will annoy me. The issue is the tile moving around as I...

Creating a totally invsible access panel in floor tiles

Can you think of an filler that will do the job of the adhesive but not stick? or perhaps stick badly It needs to keep its shape and not compress over time. But after a gentle nudge will release the tile.

Creating a totally invsible access panel in floor tiles

once a year when the boiler is serviced. The new boiler regs say that all flume joints must have access and the boiler man wont sign off unless he can see the joints. One of them will be under one tile in the kitchen floor. Removing grout with a bosch MX25e and replacing it is pretty quick...

Creating a totally invsible access panel in floor tiles

Hi, I need a small access panel in my tiled floor. (not yet laid). I really do not want to have a large tiled manhole cover in my kitchen floor. In fact, I dont want to see anything. So my thinking goes that 1. I make an access door in the under tile ply wood and make sure the door...

how long before a skimming coat can be drilled

Hi, A pro plaster is giving my wall a skim so I have a perfect flat wall for kitchen unit installaion. How long will a skim coat take to dry to the extent that I can hang cabinets from it (i.e. drill it and add wallplugs etc). I have a small time window to get the kitchen installed as the...

Best matt varnish for kitchen worktop??

Thanks diyalcovecabinets1 I was pretty confident that Bona would work for worktops as it is so tough on floors and it does not yellow. I think I just wanted to hear that someone else had tried it first and that I was not ploughing a lone DIY furrow... I am going to use Bona Traffic as...

Best matt varnish for kitchen worktop??

I have nice new untreated oak kitchen worktops. I do not want to oil them as oil turns the oak yellow, is not fully water proof, needs constant maintenance, and with each coat, builds up over time to give a shiny messy orange surface. I am going down the water based varnish route. Lovers...

Basement washing machine and vertical pump

Hi, I am putting my Bosch washing machine in the basement and I have no drainage. The distance from the outlet at the back of the machine to the ground floor drain is 5m horizontal and 1.5m vertical. I really want to avoid a sump pump. Can internal washing machine pumps handle this...

    unvented water cyclinder discharge

thanks for the advice guys. My problem is compounded by having a rubbish boiler that was going to be replaced in stage two of my grand design. If the combi can work, i think it may be the esiest option. The plumber has measured my pressure while I was at work and I have 17Litres per minute...

    unvented water cyclinder discharge

Hi onetap quick question. My old (middle of the road) combi in my previous house gave a decent shower to the first floor, but if my wife filled a kettle in the kitchen, that was the end of the shower. As we have only moved to a nearby street, the pressure/flow from thames water is the...

    unvented water cyclinder discharge

thanks onetap. I have gone full circle and am now back to a combi boiler. Like 12m londoners, i am resigned to the fact that power showers are for bankers only. At least it has with no explosive or sludge bucket cylinder in the basement and no sceptic tank in the loft.
