    Elastilon Underlay

Actually, let me rewind a bit. I'm looking for advice on laying engineered wood flooring on a brand new chipboard floor. This is in a loft conversion, so sound proofing is important. I've seen a lot of talk of Elastilon on various sites, but I suppose I really need to establish whether it's...

    Elastilon Underlay

Anyone used this? Would you recommend it? Better yet, has anyone used and can recommend some of the cheaper alternative adhesive underlays?

    Painting Old Pebble Dash Render

As title... We're going to be painting our old render which was once pebble dash and is now mainly just a very rough finish with the odd pebble. Can someone recommend a suitable brush/roller and also a great quality paint (I don't want to do this very often!!). Thanks in advance!

    Please Recommend a Shower Enclosure

Hi, As subject. I'm looking for recommendations for a good quality 1200x800 glass shower enclosure. From my research, they vary greatly in price but I'm struggling to see the difference between costing £300 and £1000 - other than the name! I've been out to a few suppliers and had a touch and...

Salus RT500RF Programmable Room Stat Questions

Panic over! Despite putting 2 brand new alkaline batteries into the remote unit, it seems it was a battery issue. I swapped the brand new batteries with 2 old ones from a TV remote, and it all springs back into life..... The last time I buy Tesco batteries!!!!

Salus RT500RF Programmable Room Stat Questions

I need some help - desperately! Out Salus RF500/Altech ALTHC014 has seemingly packed in on the coldest night of the winter thus far! I've replaced the batteries and the thermostat is showing the animated flame - but the boiler is not coming on... I've tried resetting the receiver. I've...

    Need to lift Karndean flooring

UPDATE I managed to get all the Karndean up and, to my eyes, it's in tact. It came up very easily. No kinks in the tiles or and tears etc. It's a bit "curved" on the odd tile but I'm sure it will flatten out again if it was warmed up. When lifting, the odd tile has taken a bit of the...

    Need to lift Karndean flooring

From memory, there was a 5mm ply and then a screed layed on to which the Karndean was stuck. Soon after it was fitted, I had a slight curl in one piece under the radiator and the fitter came back out to stick it back down. I seem to remember him using a heat gun for this...and come to think...

    Need to lift Karndean flooring

I've had a leak and the the boards (chipboard I believe) underneath a small are of my Karndean floored kitchen have gone soggy and soft. I obviously need to lift the Karndean and see what's going underneath but I don't want to damage the Karndean any more than absolutely necessary. How can I...

Need to cut a 60mm hole in mdf....

I need to cut a 60mm circular hole in some 24mm MDF. I am thinking of just using a standard 60mm hole saw. Thought I would use some masking tape to stop it flaking the surface too much. Is this the best method?

    Dulux Trade Eggshell

Is it going to be worth the extra money? I can get "normal" Dulux eggshell from Homebase for £20 or I can get the Dulux Trade version for £35..... What difference am I likely to see (I'm no decorating pro)..... Happy to buy the more expensive version as long as I know why.... Thanks!!

Skirtings - To Scribe or Not?

Yes.... As a rule I always "lean back" when cutting. Basically you can then have the face of the boards flush but you have a bit of room around the back to allow for some movement...

I think you're being a bit hard on yourself!! :D

Skirtings - To Scribe or Not?

Are you using the right tools for your scribe? I find the best method is to cut a 45 deg mitre on the end you will be scribing. Then, with a fine tooth hand saw, cut off the flat part of the board up to the point where the moulding starts. This leaves you with the just the moulded part of...

    Painting MDF

Hi, I've just finished building some alcove cupboards out of a mixture of softwood and MDF. I'd like to paint them this week so I'm after a bit of advice... Firstly, I've read varying recommendations for painting MDF. What is the best way of sealing it? PVA/water dilution? MDF primer...

    Mitre Saw Recommendation Please

I ended up buying the Evolution Rage 255mm from Screwfix for £165. I can't fault it. Very accurate and good smooth action. The "one size fits all blade" is surprisingly gentle on softwood and leaves a perfect cut. I did about 6 cuts last night covering a range of angles and they were all...
