    Curious about 2-pin Plug

Thanks for responses. Yes it looks as though Amazon intended the converter route. To be fair they have come to the party with a 15% discount (substantial as this is the floor standing one >£200) and a free converter. Securespark - I covered the return issue as I was concerned about chopping...

    Curious about 2-pin Plug

Ordered a chrome-plated Anglepoise lamp from Amazon as a Christmas present. Disappointed to find a 2-pin Euro plug on it. Amazon have made all the right noises and offered refunds/exchange/cost of a 3-pin plug etc. So happy there but just curious: 1. I believe it is illegal to sell any...

Trouble with a Grohe Concealed Cistern

Grohe air button (EAU2 dual flush) stopped flushing the toilet. Button seemed to be working (blowing air) but could not move the valve by blowing. I had a spare discharge valve which I have fitted - bottom cradle with O ring into the base of the cistern, then bayonet fitting of discharge valve...

    T&E behind plasterboard

Yes, RCD protection on this circuit. Thanks to all for suggestions and advice. I'll get digging. I find that tapping the wall (John Cleese-style) is a useful preliminary indication of dab locations. At least I know there is nothing else lurking under there since I was able to take pictures...

    T&E behind plasterboard

What is best practice when running T&E behind existing dot and dab plasterboard? I want to run a spur to an FCU from an existing double socket on a ring final. Plasterboards is on dabs over aerated concrete block, being the inner skin of a cavity wall. If I channel through the dabs, I reckon...

    Identify SWA

Just a scale I fear. I don't have a micrometer or even a calliper these days. But by reference to a piece of 1.5mm2, it is definitely 2.5mm2. And it fits a blue crimp.

    Identify SWA

Blue fits, red doesn't. But last time I used 1.5mm2, red didn't fit either so no help really. Thinking back I am pretty sure it is 2.5mm2 but I might just buy a new length so I am sure what I am using. Thanks for all assistance (including the French woman.....?). Just surprised that if they...

    Identify SWA

I see what you mean, thanks for the table. The 13-14mm is measuring the major and minor diameters but almost exactly replicates the the difference between 1.5 and 2.5mm2. Now if I had a kilometre of it, I could weigh it...... BAS, I reckon the core is 2mm.......? Perhaps I have to cart it...

    Identify SWA

Can anybody help me identify the core size of an offcut of SWA? Moulded into the outer sheath it says " ELECTRIC CABLE 600/1000v BS5467-1997" then printed in white "1416 MT I P NO 13344031". The 1416 seems to be a progressive no as it is 1415 and the 1414 further back along the cable. I cant...

    External Termination of SWA

Adam_151/Risteard - Thanks both. I'll use CW glands and piranhas as suggested by BAS.

    External Termination of SWA

Thanks for responses: BAS - my main concern was external use of SWA gland, therefore reluctant to use two more to extend beyond the Masterseal socket. But if such use is OK then I am happy to continue the SWA. Useful tip re piranha nut - obviously I need to earth the armour, getting...

    External Termination of SWA

I have an swa cable which originally fed a shed. The shed has given way to a new patio and I want to re-terminate the SWA to feed some 12-24v DC patio lights, an external socket and a 240v floodlight to an adjacent utility area. The SWA was previously terminated to a metal clad socket inside...

    Basin Waste

I have two wash basins with what I think are called "click-clack" wastes, that is with a central button - push to open the waste (button stays depressed), push again to close the waste (button comes back up). One of them will no longer stay in the open position. The button can be depressed...

Reinstrating Floor Screed over CH Pipes

My plumber just had to open up the sand/cement floor screed over twin 22mm copper ch pipes to look for a leak, at the same time removing the black plastic and "hessian" (?) sheathing from the top of the pipes. Leak's all fixed; how should I expect him to be re-instating this sheathing...

    Wylex board with MCB's

Thanks everyone, that seems pretty decisive! No there is no problem (so far) with fuses blowing, I just saw the reference and thought it might save her fiddling with fuse wire. But the pre-wired spare carrier idea is a good one, I'll get some for her. Incidentally, although there was an...

    Wylex board with MCB's

OwainDiyer, excuse my ignorance but was that a vote in favour of MCB's or not?!

    Wylex board with MCB's

A recent post about upgrading a CU referred to an "original Wylex board (which) at some stage has had MCBs fitted". My daughter has just moved into a Victorian terrace conversion which has such a Wylex board with plug-in wired fuse carriers. I would estimate 1960's. The electrical...

    Dimmer Mystery

The issue was just that, it was an expensive dimmer that didn't work. However in response to bas, it turns out there has been some miscommunication along the line. The original didn't work, the replacement does. As RF suggests, the standard one off the van worked perfectly well, the one...

    Dimmer Mystery

I have to assume the spark knows what he is doing. Agreed the dimmer is manually switchable between the two modes. perhaps I should have said the dimmer identifies automatically which mode it is in by beeping, continuous for trailing edge, 3 x short for leading edge. HOWEVER, folowing...

    Dimmer Mystery

Its a Hamilton LEDstat 5-100w intelligent dimmer running 6 x JCC FGLED6 - or not, in this case. It doesn't even go through the auto start up cycle.
