lost a tooth, worktop hob help

People look at me funny when I tell them I cut my doors down with a router - but you sound like you're in the same jigsaw zone I am, can't use one for toffee! A straight piece of wood, some nails (and some wood filler), a router and an electric sander later and the cuts are nice and neat...

To hire, or buy and sell?

Hi Paul, I certainly agree that the professionals do a much more efficient job, and the shed full of tools is annoying! (Although we're doing every room, so we're definitely using things more than once) On the quality of finish though, I must admit I'm actually dead chuffed at the accuracy...

To hire, or buy and sell?

Really? Bear in mind this is two rooms - one around 2.5 x 3m, the other around 4 x 5m, and this is skirting and architrave. The skirting is 7" solid oak and the architrave's solid oak as well. If that's genuinely the going rate, then maybe I won't bother doing any of the rooms downstairs...

To hire, or buy and sell?

Would you happen to know how accurate the thing is - I'm a freakin' lousy "carpenter" at the best of times, so as worn out as the current hire saw is, at least it's a decent brand and it seems pretty accurate. On the comment re paying 60 quid and nothing to show for it, at least...

    Being Eaten

Booooo! Don't spoil the illusion for me! They keep a list of all the viewer corrections on a website somewhere don't they? Remember once they nicked points off someone for getting the freezing point of water 0.5-odd degrees off in a previous episode after someone complained. Russ :)

    Physics question 2...

An interesting one - I seem to remember reading somewhere that no matter how fast the surface of the earth rotates, it still only rotates once per day - any object on a sphere that rotates once per day, no matter how big the sphere, will feel the same (miniscule) centripetal effects. Is it...

To hire, or buy and sell?

Hi all, I've just hired myself a sliding mitre saw for the weekend from HSS, and the thing's bloody knackered - the blade guard doesn't open properly, the sliding mechanism is stiff as anything, and the blade's blunt as anything - burning the hell out of the skirting boards I'm cutting...

Why are you giving away free trade knowledge

Can I add my perspective on this? This site and the experts on here, be they tradesmen or avid DIYers have absolutely saved me, my other half and my 6-month-old baby girl from living in a house that's been slowly falling apart around our ears. We moved into a property 18 months ago, after...

Tips for blocking up an archway

Hi all, I'm about to embark on a 9 day diy-extravaganza, involving demolishing walls, boarding up and moving doors, etc. :S One job that's currently got me concerned (because I've never done it before) is blocking up an archway. This is a supporting wall, and the bricks in the wall are...

Unnecessary damp-proofing done - should we be complaining?

Okay, a bit more detail on the background - the damp proofing was done as a result of a survey we had done when we bought the house. Countrywide did the surveying, they found damp and recommended we get in a specialist damp-proofing company to do a proper damp survey. The estate agent...

Unnecessary damp-proofing done - should we be complaining?

Hi all, Not sure if this is the best place to post this, but I hope so! We had some damproofing work done back in early 2009, which involved removing plaster from a bunch of walls, drilling, injecting stuff and replastering. Apart from the fact that replastering was straight as a...

Problem with door casing and plaster level

Hi all, I've got a slight problem with a door frame that I'm about to attach some architrave to! Not sure how the original architrave was fitted successfully, but I've just found out after removing it that the plsater sits about 3mm proud of the door frame at one side, and it's flush at the...

Fitting oak skirting - screw, plug, then apply finish?

Hi all, If I'm fitting oak skirting, and I screw and plug them, does this mean that I'll have to finish them after they're on the wall? I'm guessing that the process is: 1. Cut the boards to size 2. Sand and stain the boards 3. Drill the screw holes 4. Screw the boards to the wall 5...

How do you turn unfinished oak into this?

Many thanks to you all for your advise so far - I've actually had all the oak skirting and architrave delivered, and I guess luckily, there's quite a lot of duff offcuts the ends so they've delivered excess. So I can use these offcuts to experiment - I'll get a couple of stains (already found...

How do you turn unfinished oak into this?

Personally I feel like I'd like a satin varnish on it, but I don't want to lose the natural feel and texture of the wood. Russ :)

    Is this door a bargain?

Good point, should've mentioned this is also a local place luckily, and the price if you buy in store is even better than the 50 quid they quote online. Russ

    Is this door a bargain?

Hi all, I'm in need of a bunch of new doors - is the below door as much of a bargain as it looks? Or do you all think it's a bit too plain? It's unfinished red oak, 50 quid...

How do you turn unfinished oak into this?

Thanks for the advice so far, it's cleared up quite a lot for me - so is it safe to assume that I need to: a) Apply a stain b) Apply something to protect the stain, which is either oil or a satin oil-based varnish? New questions unfortunately... :( a) If I buy a stain that seems really...
