    Leaf vacuum cleaner

Thanks for your reply. I am not planning on wet leaves but like your idea of blowing them off and then sucking up. The idea of hiring first is good also.

    Chimney flu extraction regs

I assume then from your description its not what is normally classed as range cooker (E.G Aga; Rayburn, Stanley etc) but a double width gas cooker with normal gas burners which will not require an open flue.

    Chimney flu extraction regs

If your range cooker is solid fuel, oil or gas you are not allowed to have an extractor fan in a room with an open flued appliance.

    extending ladders

I note that you say "they" will be cutting high branches. If they are tree surgeons I would cancel them and get a proper contractor. The professional tree surgeons clime the trees with spikes on their legs which dig in the trunk and straps around the tree. I have seen several trees done this way...

    Leaf vacuum cleaner

As my wife and I are getting on in years we are covering the flower beds with weed prevention fabric and gravel, with roses growing thro' the fabric and flowers in large pots. However, there are also trees around and consequently leaves in the autumn. Having never used a leaf blower/sucker I...

    Collection of building rubbish

Shortly I will have a quantity of old tiles, plasterboard and plaster, plus a few old bricks etc. In all this will probably go into a dumpy bag. The question is which is cheapest - dumpy collection or a 2yd skip.

    Battery system for solar PV

Thanks for all the interesting comments, as my normal evening requirements are a couples of LED lights, TV and about 50watts for the oil fired cooker/boiler I have decided on a simple 2 socket circuit and a 3LED light circuit powered from a pure sine wave invertor with a 60 amp/hour SLA battery...

    Battery system for solar PV

I find that comment difficult to understand, given that most commercial systems use Tesla batteries and cost upwards of £6,500

    Battery system for solar PV

I am considering installing a battery system as an addition to solar panels, however the cost is prohibitive. Have any of the sparkies on here any experience of this as I would like to use SLA batteries but have no idea how these link to the system to provide power when the sun is not shining. I...

    Apprenticeships

Just thinking about the apparent shortage of tradesmen and it came to mind, does the City and Guilds still exist to control apprenticeships? I presume there is no 5 year apprenticeships that we had in the 50's and 60's etc.

    Leaking radiator valves.

I have just replaced a radiator removed for redecorating and no matter what I try the connection into the radiator leaks. The original taps (type that fits with hex key) had a slight weep so I decided to remake the connections before refitting, the weep was now a leak. Replaced the rad with a...

How to change tap water flow?

It appears that the isolators are not fully open, Also if you can remove the flexies and pipe direct to the taps in 15mm copper that will help, and this will also give you purer water.(flexies harbour germs)

    Schools to have mental advisor

Seems that schools are being given an adviser to help the little darlings with depression. I am of the belief that every school should teach the poem by W.H Davis with the first two lines that read "What is this life, if full of care, there is no time to stand and stare". And for those who feel...

    Support for small overhanging roof

I am shortly to extend a porch roof which will leave an approx. 1 metre square overhang. The intention was to support this with a seasoned oak post 100mm square. However the cost of this post is prohibitive so I am looking at either a 150mm square softwood post or an aluminium scaffold tube. Any...

    Driveway surface

I have a concrete drive which has been patched several times and looks tatty. Money is tight (retired) so resin is probably out. Some years ago the local council resurfaced the foot paths along our road with a black stuff which was brushed on; It gave a good finish and lasted a long time with...

    Boxing in Radiator Pipes

If you decide to re pipe I would consider going round the walls at skirting level. You can then fix a batten to the wall at skirting height then fix the skirting to that. It will then look like thick skirting and hardly noticeable. You could do the same around doors with the architrave.

    Router

I have just purchased (actually a birthday present) an Eberth router table, hoping to use my Ryobi router. No such luck. Can anyone suggest an economical router with a faceplate no larger than 155mm diameter which will work with this table. It is for very occasional DIY use so does not need to...
