I am shortly to extend a porch roof which will leave an approx. 1 metre square overhang. The intention was to support this with a seasoned oak post 100mm square. However the cost of this post is prohibitive so I am looking at either a 150mm square softwood post or an aluminium scaffold tube. Any suggestions as to which is best?

TIA

Scaffold tube and paint on oak grain effect. Probably golden oak.(y)
Don't use any clips though, that will ruin the effect. (n)

I am liking this scaffold idea. It's a clever post modernist joke on temporary and permanent.

People will laugh at the OP's wit and cleverness.

I've used a scaffold tube to hold one end of a canopy
that covers my decking.
I painted it and nobody has yet noticed that it is
a scaffolding pole.

I'd imagine no one has suspected it's a piece of oak either.

Have you tried ebay? That kind of oak post is 30 to 40 quid new around this way. Even less if you find the right auction.
