    Changing from copper to plastic

You’re probably right but It just pains me to see it in its current state. Maybe I should leave it as is but insulate it and clip it out of the way

    Changing from copper to plastic

The pipes are coming through the floor anyway at the minute but will now chase it in centrally then out left and right so the pipework is hidden. I have an ideal logic + system S30 with a 250L water tank which is only 1 year old. Not that I know anything about boilers but it does a good job of...

    Changing from copper to plastic

It’s a 1950s house which has had some major renovations with a new roof and dormers etc. it’s really well insulated upstairs so for the size of the house the radiator are quite small. Now I’m working on the downstairs where the radiators are huge so will be changing to modern ones. Yes you’re...

    Changing from copper to plastic

I was about to change a few radiators using 10mm plastic sunk into the wall and had a crawl under the floor to check out the pipework. There must be 100 meters plus of 10mm copper piping not even clipped up so was thinking of changing it all to plastic and neatening it all up. There’s 22mm...

    Granite outdoor flags

I was going to lay them on 3 parts sharp, 1 builders & 1 cement with a slurry on the back. Is chucking in a bit of builders sand a problem?

    Granite outdoor flags

I’m about to lay some granite flags and wondered if I need to seal the tops before I start. Granite “generally” is non porous but I’m unsure how it reacts with sand & cement. I was planning on sealing them once they’re down anyway (as it’s easier) but wondered if I need to do that pre laying.

Expansion gap in thermalite external 7m+ wall

Ok thanks guys. Would you recommend using the strips rather than backer rod ( which I have seen some people use ) ? Is one easier to install than the other seeing as the wall has already been built?

Expansion gap in thermalite external 7m+ wall

Thanks. The building inspector said to do the inside was preferable but as location is very shaded he could live with joint just on outside. Can the joint fillers be picked up from general builders merchants or is it more of a specialist place?

Expansion gap in thermalite external 7m+ wall

We have an external thermalite block wall on our side extension which we have been told by building control needs to have an expansion joint retrofitted as it exceeds 7m in length. Can someone advise me how wide the gap needs to be and what to fill it with between the blocks. It will then be...

Can’t remove cylinder lock from door

I’m trying the change the barrel to one with a thumb turn on the inside. I’ve removed the screw but there’s a guard that’s stopping me from removing the barrel. Anyone come across a lock like this? Thanks.

    Maximum floor joist spans

Hi - trying to work out maximum floor spans for 6x3 floor joists to blend in with existing floors. Looking at NHBC and other ‘free’ calculators based on BS 6399-1 the spans for 400 centres seem really small (using NHBC recommended dead load assumption of 0.25 to 0.5 kN/m2) at 2.6m in C16 or 2.9m...

    Fire sprinkler system

My parents live in a listed building in north wales and have an incomplete sprinkler system which needs finishing. The contractor took payment and left the job incomplete. The sprinklers are in-situ however it needs a tank and pump to complete the job. Are there any guys out there willing to...

    Decking bridging DPC

I’m about to add some decking at the back of the house (see pic) and I’m after a bit of advice. Seeing as there’s 2 x air bricks under the sill, if I left about 1 1/2” gap would that be enough for air flow? The gap would then be hidden by the sill. Or would it be ok to fix the frame to the...

Tiling a garden wall (duplicate threads merged)

The wall is only about 16” so it seems a lot of hassle. Also because the bricks are so bumpy it’d be a pain getting a fixing

Tiling a garden wall (duplicate threads merged)

I have a low garden wall which I want to add mosaic tiles to but the bricks are quite bumpy so It will need smoothing out first. Should I render it or use plaster bonding? Thanks

Decking between house and garden wall

I’m about to install a deck at the front of a terrace house and have a couple of questions. The deck will be 1.8m deep x 3.3m long which will be fixed to the house and the front garden wall (below the dpc). I was going to leave a gap of 10mm around the deck frame on the house and wall side and...
