    Damp after Damp proofing

Hi Ken. Thanks for the reply. The building is approximately 100 years old we believe. I’m not too technical I’m afraid. The exterior is brick, covered with rendering. I don’t think it’s a cavity wall?

    Damp after Damp proofing

Hi. So, this is a common problem right? That damp gets mistreated by damp proofing when damp showed on the walls? It’s happened to us. After all the snow and rain recently, I’ve just noticed a big patch of moisture up the corner of our living room wall. We had it proofed and plastered about 5...

    Various jobs needed doing

Cheers Andy. Unfortunately, I’ve been working for months on the house, so it’s not really leaving everything to the last minute. My query was really whether I can just get a handy man to do these jobs or if I’m likely to have to get a combination of tradespeople. Granted that I have to leave it...

    Various jobs needed doing

Hi. I have £6000 to do some work to my home with, but I’m wondering how best and how efficiently to do the work. I need a whole range of jobs; fitting skirting boards, putting up blinds and curtains, painting skirting boards and cupboards, hacking off paint and wallpaper, on top of fitting...

    Cleaning bare floorboards

OK, thanks. I thought a damp rag could warp the wood? No special solution needed then?

    Cleaning bare floorboards

Hi there. I ripped up the carpet on a house I bought three months ago and have been doing lots of work to the house. It's very dusty! Eventually, I'll lay new floor, but for now I just want to lay down rugs over the floorboards downstairs so we don't have to walk around with shoes on all the...

Lots to paint - one size fits all?!

Thanks opps. Is 180 grit silicone carbide paper something I can easily find in my local B&Q/Wickes?! I’ve got satinwood paint to go over. So your suggestion is; Sand down, Wipe and clean? One coat of satinwood? Thanks

Lots to paint - one size fits all?!

Hi. I have to paint; Skirting boards Cupboard doors Draws They are all painted on at the moment, so I’m looking to sand them down, prime them and then paint them. Is that OK? Re sanding; can I buy an orbital sander and use this on all of the above? Or am I best to sand by hand? I had a go...

Who to go to for new boiler?

Thanks DP. Problem is, we’ve only lived there three months and the back boiler has knackered up three times and engineers moan and refuse to come out to deal with it. It’s a pain in the arse to be honest. We’ve already spent a good few hundred quid on it with no progress.

Who to go to for new boiler?

Thanks Gordon. Any idea what price range I would be looking at to replace a back boiler with a combi? Not on finance?

Who to go to for new boiler?

Hi. I have a back boiler and it needs replacing for a new combi boiler. How much should I expect that to set me back? £4K-£5k? And is it wise to go to a local independent gas company or shall I be safe with British Gas? Wanting to pay on finance... Thanks.

Do I need to cap off radiator valve pipes?

Hi there. I had my boiler fixed yesterday, and had my radiators taken off the wall a few weeks ago to allow for renovation works to take place. The gas engineer says I can't have hot water because the radiators aren't capped off. They are closed off, with a minor hissing leak coming from the...

Cutting in, skirting boards, cupboards and radiators

Thanks everyone. Next problem / question! I stuck tape on the skirting boards before I painted and when I’ve ripped them off, some of the paint has come away off the wall edges with it. Not much, but it needs tidying up. Can I just go back over the tears with a brush or does it need special...

Cutting in, skirting boards, cupboards and radiators

CHEERS Both. Didn’t go for tape, but made it a little messy on the edges! There’s some blue on the ceiling. Any good tip to get that off?! Just go over with the white emulsion again??

Cutting in, skirting boards, cupboards and radiators

Hi there I’m putting the second coat on my walls tomorrow after sealing and first coating. 1) The ceiling has had its second white coat today and is complete. I want to cut in the wall with blue paint but want to get the edges neat, where the wall meets the ceiling. Can I put tape on the...
