    Single glazed window vent

Are there any non-powered alternatives to this window vent currently installed in a 4.4lx3.1wx2.6h bathroom ? Old bathroom only had 1100w of heat input and a draughty window. and never had problems with condensation and the blades would turn with no external wind providing some sort of...

    Paint or replace window

The whole window.. all parts are in as bad condition. I've got plenty time on my hands, but it would be pointless to spend hours/days on it to have it rotting from the inside out and the paint peeling in a couple of years. I suppose the question is...can it be made good from it's current state ?

    Paint or replace window

At least 17 years untouched, South facing. Do I strip and repaint or replace ? I've got plenty time on my hands. What preparation will it need if I take the paint option ? http://home2.btconnect.com/dublydublydubly/PhotoAlbums/album_1330699303/

    Bathroom joist notches

Refurbishing the bathroom and had a nasty surprise when I lifted the floorboards. http://home2.btconnect.com/dublydublydubly/PhotoAlbums/album_1306180433/ The joists are 7x2 with a couple 7x3 , at 16 inch centres with a 10 feet span. The pic is the worst notch, 3.5 inches wide and 2.5inches...

    One cold rad... dodgy pipework

Bucket test.. http://www.diynot.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=1140570#1140570 Number 52 in the FAQ . I'm sorted... looks like a visit to the Pope 'cos the water wasn't flowing downhill  I discovered both flow and return dropped 5 inches from their Tee's to miss an old gas pipe...

    One cold rad... dodgy pipework

Old CH system and always had problems with one rad not getting hot. Flushed the system today and did a sort of bucket test on both ends of the pipes feeding the suspect rad... no problems. Flushed rad, a bit of gunge.Normal valve one end, TRV the other ok. Put it all back together and left...

    Secret nailing

I am replacing an existing 1880's softwood floor as the 168mm wide full length boards are not in good enough condition to strip. Room is 4.8m x 3.8m with 2inch joists at 400mm centre to centre above a full height ( 7feet)stone floored basement.. effectively a first-floor room. The adjacent...

Occasional single ring on the phone

Had BT in some time ago. They moved the master socket from the original location to one of the extensions and installed a NTE5 for the ADSL connection. The original socket is physically still there but no longer a master. Since installation, we occasionally ( one time in 10 or 15) only get one...

Where should the main earth connect to the gas/water pipes

A sparks has just done some minor works on the house and has told me the main earth should have 2 x 10mm earth and not 2 x 6mm, even though there's no sign of burning. My query is about where they should be bonded to the gas/water pipe. Currently the earth to the gas pipe is bonded to the...

    Soilpipe dilema

I have an 1886 property built on a slope so it's 3 levels at the front and 4 at the back. It was built without plumbing so when the wc's/bathrooms were installed on the 1st and 2nd floors (ie level 2 and 3 from the front they were installed at the side of the house with a single soilpipe and...

    Leaking shower pump

I'll try ptfe on the olive....There's a flow switch on both hot and cold sides of the pump. "That type of plastic nut & compresion ring is easier to seal if on a piece of copper before the flexible hose".....still leaves me to make a connection to the plastic flow switch if I put in some extra...

    Leaking shower pump

I've got a leak on the hot water outlet side of my NewTeam shower pump where the plastic pressure valve connects to the flexible re-inforced hose. The joint is copper pipe into plastic thread of the valve with a plastic nut and white plastic compresssion olive. It's been ok for years but now...

    Removing old iron railing stubs

I'm want to instal new iron railings to the front wall built around 1885 and need to remove the old iron stubs from the coping stones. The stones are 20" x 30 " x 4". The old railings were cut off level and are 3/4" round set in lead in a 1" hole. The hole does not go all the way through the...

    Replacing a flouresent kitchen light

Don't.... I took out a 5 foot fluorescent "because my wife thought it looked ugly". As I needed to do stuff to the ceiling I put in a temporary 4 x R50 fitting......the light is crap.....working in shadow on all the work surfaces that don't have under-cupboard lights. Now the plastering's been...

    Downlights in Kitchen

The more I look, the more unsure I'm becoming on what's the best option. Definitely going ELV for 9 x 35/50w downlighters in the kitchen. It's just been skimmed after I scrapped off the dimply stuff the previous owner used in a failed attempt to cover the minor cracks. The ceiling's 9ft (ok...
