    Boiler wiring question

A customer has had a new electric central heating boiler installed and wants me to wire it up. The customer has already got the time programmer but the plumber has told the customer that I'll need to use a relay as well. For those of you who regularly do CH wiring, is a relay a plumbers term...

First rewire - any advice or books that will help me out ?

If you're using it as a reference job for registration, and the inspection timings allow, don't bother with notifying LABC. Certify it yourself once you've passed the inspection. One thing I found was that my estimating was always optomistic. Jobs would pretty much always take longer than I...

    Central heating zone valve replacement

In that case, Sunvic it shall be. Many thanks for your help with this, much appreciated.

    Central heating zone valve replacement

The head definitely comes off separate to the valve. I just wondered if I could replace the Sunvic actuator with a superior Honeywell one. It's not a problem if I can't as I'll just put another Sunvic one on. It's just that I don't rate them and would rather do the job with better kit.

    Central heating zone valve replacement

The customer in this case is a friend who's lost her job so it needs to be done as cheaply as possible. Getting a plumber in is a cost she may struggle with. I could get another Sunvic as a direct replacement but I agree with you that they're carp.

    Central heating zone valve replacement

I've finally traced an intermittent fault in a customer's heating system to a broken valve. I only want to replace the head mechanism, not the whole valve. Do they have a standard fixing arrangement? The system has one Honeywell valve but the broken valve is from Sunvic. Is it possible to...

Doh, I was thinking of 2381/2 not EAL. My mistake.

I think they'd be retakes after a previous fail.

    bare wire in wall

522.6.6 (i) mentions compliant earthed metal covering, so I guess that capping may actually be acceptable as long as it meets BS standards. (I haven't looked up the BS standard definitions so maybe they don't include capping). 522.6.6 (ii) and (iii) specifically mention compliant earthed...

Sorry, you're spot on. I got that one wrong. I'll change the post to remove the error.

    bare wire in wall

It's perfectly acceptable to bury T&E cable direct in plaster. However, it's good practise to protect it against wayward plasterers tools taking chunks out of the cable. PVC capping or conduit are usually enough. They also make it easier to pull a cable out of the chase should you have reason...

    New kitchen and CU replacement

Client wants to replace their kitchen. The house currently has a 4 way rewireable fuse box (lights, ring, cooker, immersion heater). The customer understands that this needs upgrading and is happy for a CU replacement. However, they are not happy to have a rewire. The general condition of the...

    Electrician's and the recession

There's a very big difference in the training requirements for an "electrician" and a "domestic electrical installer" and you need to work out which route you go down. The first takes years as I understand it, with college and placement work. The latter is a series of short courses that take...

    RCD keeps tripping..

Providing the socket you're taking the spur from isn't itself a spur you'll be fine.

Requirements & costs to be able to self cert??

The trouble is that you'll need pretty much the same tools for "odd job" work as if you were going it alone full time. This means well in excess of £2k if you're starting out. Here's a lot of what you'll need. I doubt I've covered everything... You'll need hand and power tools, ladders...

    Shower head adjustment

I've got a shower head similar to the one shown at this address --> http://www.bathroomstuff.co.uk/product188.html When it was first installed a few years ago the water came down in a straight flow, ie a vertical column of water. Since then I've needed to descale it a few times. Sometimes...

That suggests completely the opposite. Even better if she's got your tool in her hand. Then who cares about whether the immersion still works? Sorry, off topic I know.

    BS 7671 and the novice

I must say I'm getting concerned by your questioning. I may be reading too much in to your questions but it does seem that you're trying to justify DIY so long as you conform to the regs. The regs are a 400 page technical document that cover, or refer to, all aspects of electrical...

    shed electrics

nordog, your requirement is a little vague. By happy coincidence, this weekend I'm coming to Bath, from my rural idyl in Dorset, to watch the mighty Wasps put the over-rated Barf in their place. If schedules permit, I'd be happy to pop in and see what you need. If it's seriously trivial...
