the point I was trying to make above was that my CH pipes are not availble where I want the heater/rad to go; they are somewhere under the floor of the room above. it seems like alot of effort to divert them downstairs just to heat a single radiator?

hiya, the boiler is a Stelrad WRS 450, but this is not in the loft. just pipes and hot + cold water tanks up there so I s'pose the frost stat is to protect them...

cheers for the extra options :) but given that there is already a frost stat in the loft, isn't it going to be much cheaper and easier just to fit the pipe stat to complement it? I'm not really looking for the perfect solution to protecting the pipes, just to prevent the boiler lighting...

well, yes there are tanks in the loft. but since there is insulation down and all the pipes are lagged the ambient air temp in the loft doesn't really change much even if the flat below is warm. that's the problem really - when it is cold the frost stat turns on the heating but never gets...

I think I'm confusing myself lol. frost stats, pipe stats and normal room thermostats are all essentially the same aren't they? they are just switches that are "on" when the detected temp is below the preset temp. so yes, I understand now that it's easier to just wire in the extra pipe...
