    Glazing beads problem

When the door and side frame were delivered the glass was held in the frame by the 2 short pieces of beading in the middle of the long edges of the frame. So it must be possible to get them in though I don't know if the beads were correctly locked into the slot. When I first started to fit the...

    Glazing beads problem

The picture on the link doesn't do the difficulty justice. Looking at the drawing it looks like the bead should just push in but the glass thickness stops me from getting the angle I need to get the beads in. Plus the bead tongue that wont go into the slot in the frame is curved upwards making...

    Glazing beads problem

Hi all. I finished fitting a composite door this afternoon which has a glass sidelight attached to the frame. It's a upvc frame and I've hit a massive snag trying to glaze it. I can't get the beads in after hours of trying and I've tried everything. I've fitted a canny few upvc windows in the...

    Meter cables

There's a pic of the CU but I've more or less decided to have the house rewired. My wife's sisters grandson is an electrician and works as, to use his terminology, a house basher. He's just bought his first house and so wil be skint so I'll get him to have a look. If the earth method is obsolete...

    Meter cables

It is a voelcb. After reading the replies I've had a read up via Google and found that is what it is called. I've also read that when an electrician comes across one of these devices he should change it for a "today"alternative. A bit worrying. I think I've worked out why there is two cables...

    Meter cables

Hi all. I'm after a bit of info about the wiring in my house which was built in 1970. In the pics below you can see the black and red cables which come from the meter and go to the junction box on the left. They are fairly heavy looking cables, but then the current is carried to the earth...

    Dulux white.

Hi all. I'm painting a ceiling with Dulux brilliant matt white, described as having something called chromalock technology. It's going on an off white colour against the white undercoat which is a bit worrying. Does this paint look off-white when wet, but then dry out white? Or have I got a...

    Boarding a ceiling.

hi all. I'm plasterboarding a bedroom ceiling and need a bit of info. The room is about 11ft square and I'm using 6x3 1/2" boards. There is a joist running down the centre of the room which means I only have to cut a few inches off the boards and 2 boards meet in the middle. The problem is if I...

    Old Grundfos pump.

Hi all. I've noticed that my Grundfos Central heating pump has white salt like crustaceans with streaks of green around one of its isolating valves. I'm guessing this is because it is leaking even though there is no dampness and I can't see any leaks. The pump is at least 25 years old but it has...

    Brickwork questions

The windows are 1300 high, the dwarf wall isn't too dwarfy. :) I'm not quite sure what you mean by the return. If one face of the corner is two and a half bricks is there a minimum number of bricks for the other face of the corner? I'll likely do both faces the same to keep it symmetrical...

    Brickwork questions

The foundations won't be a problem I went OTT with them when I originally built the conservatory, because it has one full height wall. They are the same depth as the house. The existing has wood frames and a thin polycarbonate roof. Because of the direction the garden faces we get a lot of sun...

    Brickwork questions

The only base fixing I'd have is to the top row of bricks on the existing walls. I don't think I'll have anything at roof level to fix to other than the conservatory roof itself. So the roof would be using the brickwork to secure it, but the brickwork would be using the roof for the same reason.

    Brickwork questions

Some pictures I've seen on the net looked like bricks were turned across the cavity which would show a neat uncut half brick at the front and strengthen the piers at the same time. It was only the neatness of the half bricks that made me think it was the end of a full brick. They didnt look...

    Brickwork questions

Hi all. I'm looking to make alteration to my conservatory and was after a bit of info about brickwork. I want to add corner piers to the existing dwarf walls and also add brick dividers between the windows. The piers and dividers will be like the picture below but only one and a half bricks...

    New tiles or old?

One roofer I contacted didn't turn up and this Is the only quote I've had so far. The quote I got was from a roofer used by a builder I know. This builder i know recommends him so I'm thinking of just getting him to do the work rather than risk getting somebody dodgy. I was just curious if his...

    New tiles or old?

That isn't actually my house I posted that picture to show the style of roof and the gable. I'm using an iPad and pictures are difficult to upload. Is there a general cost per square metre for this type of work. The roofers price of 2.4k doesn't seem too bad but I haven't a clue what is reasonable.

    New tiles or old?

Hi all. The underfelt on my 1970 built semi has rotted and split in a number of areas and now there are a couple of leaks into the loft. The roof has interlocking concrete tiles and the house style is like the one in the picture. Ive had a roofer give a price to remove the tiles, felt and...
