    Preparing Walls for Painting

But is the quote for labour only or is the P&D supplying the emulsion? Does it say anywhere on the quote labour only? Perhaps they should have made it clearer at the start but "prepare" walls may just mean the labour for hanging the lining paper? How much will the lining paper cost, how...

    joint tape on TE plasterboard

Sorry Joe, that's b0110cks. Utter b0110cks. Some may do just one coat although I certainly don't know any plasterers who do one coat. Ever. And I know some who've been at it for thirty years. Sorry, tell a lie, I do know one plasterer who does one coat. He does it when he's working on council...

    joint tape on TE plasterboard

I couldn't disagree more. For me, the second coat is applied to smooth out any imperfections in the first. I would never, ever, apply just one coat. For the few mintes saved it's just not worth it when you see the final results. I have too much pride in my work to hav any wish to bodge it...

    Leaking Worcester 240

Cheers folks, If it's owt to do with the gas then it'll be a call out job methinks. Fixed the boiler before but if there's a risk of me doing anything incorrect with the gas then I'd rather pay someone who knows what they're doing. Sounds like it's more of a labour cost than parts cost - I...

    Plastering behind radiator?

Even if it's possible to get a hand to the hole, it's not always possible to get a normal trowel into the space although a margin trowel would help. It's best to get a plasterer round for his (or her) opinion. Your plumber says there's no shut off valves. Is it not possible to drain the...

Any clear waterproof coating for plaster walls?

Here it is. Like I say, not the cheapest, but then again, what's the cost of repairing long term water ingress? Well orth it IMHO. regards Fred

    Leaking Worcester 240

Got a problem with my problematic old Worcester 240 combi. I woke up in the night to hear a drip drip dripping from the boiler cupboard. It was leaking out of the bottom of the boiler so I took the cover off and found that the source of the leak was from the inside. You see that pipe...

    Unit mounted socket

I thought electrical fittings needed to be fixed to the fabric of the building? Whether or not a fitted kitchen unit is classed as the fabric of the building is up for debate. For the purposes of building and contents insurance, a kitchen is part of the building but this could be different...

Any clear waterproof coating for plaster walls?

If you're worried because of water ingress into the grout then you need a tanking kit. they're not the cheapest thing in the world but it will waterproof your shower area very effectively. Google it and you'll find what you need. You can also do a search on the forum - I'm sure there'll be...

    joint tape on TE plasterboard

I'd never skim in one coat - the finish is never as good as a two coat skim. Basically hat you're saying is that two coat skimming is ony for s/e boards and all other skimming is one coat. Do youmone coat re-skims? Regards Fred

    screwfix coving

No worries. One other thing. Go for the powdered cove adhesive rather than ready mixed stuff too. Much better. Much cheaper and you can mix just what you need. It's got better grab than ready mix too. Can be found in the building section again. Regards Fred

    new tv ad

In any event, everyone has to start somewhere and training courses are a good base for basic knowlege. Once that knowlege is gained, one can start working in the real world and continue learning through experience. The wy some training courses are marketed is wrong though, giving the...

    joint tape on TE plasterboard

No, the purpose of tapered boards is to do away with skimming. You tape the joint, fill with jointing compound and sand smooth. If one chooses to skim then so be it but that kind of defeats the object of tapered edge boards. And it's just my personal preference. I don't like tape and joint -...

    joint tape on TE plasterboard

There shouldn't be any adhesive sticking through the joint. Only joint cement if taping and jointing. If skimming the whole wall then the tapered edge is pointless since the scrim will be covered by the two coat skim you lay on after fixing the boards. regards Fred.

    base for a shed

Steve, You're thinking of a concrete base and asking what materials to construct it with! Concrete would be a good start mate? :D Seriously, is it a wooden shed or metal? If wooden then it'll have an integral base and by far the easiest and cheapest option is simply to use a few stury...

    screwfix coving

I won't use anything other than plaster coving. This polystyrene stuff worries me - polystyrene gives off toxic fumes when burned (and also burns ferociously!). In the event of a fire I worry what effect this stuff will have. OK, so there are many things in the house that brn and give toxic...

    Kitchen ceiling nightmare

Yeah, easy enough ratter. The only potential issue is if the boards arent staggered then there's the risk of a large crack appearing some time in the future. Still, its possible to leave existing adhesive in place, scrim, PVA then skim. Regards Fred

    wall preperation

Shouldn't really need to prep walls for dot n dab really. If it was bare unpainted brick then the only thing I do is to dampen the bricks down first before applying the adhesive. Regards Fred

    Spot or not?

Evenin' all, Just wondering whether you use a spot board or not? Personally I don't because I work without a labourer and to me it's just an extra thing to clean and as a result works out no quicker than scooping muck from a bucket. Regards Fred
